A public appeal urges Alma residents and the college to set aside June 17 and 18 for a major musical festival. Three B16 numbers, a grand oratorio, a large amateur orchestra and notable soloists will showcase town and gown collaboration to place Alma on the musical map and boost civic pride. REESE F. Death of Ray O. Smith at Michigan Avenue home
Ray O. Smith died at his Michigan Avenue residence after months of illness. A skilled mechanic electrician he worked for Nelson Bros Co making pump jacks, devised a plan, and succumbed to tuberculosis. He was born May 20, 1850 in Gratiot county and lived in Ithaca. He leaves wife Marie Cunningham, two daughters Beulah and Marie, his parents, sister, and brother. Funeral at Episcopal church, Rev. J Frank Jackson officiated, burial in Riverside.

Electric Storm Hits City Frightens Residents
Last Friday evening a severe electric storm lashed the city between 7 and 8 pm. Lightning struck the belfry of St. Mary’s church, scattering shingles and punching a hole through siding as a dark exit. A Joy Van Leaven barn on lannab avenue and a maple tree at Mechanic and Maple were damaged. The weather shifted from heat to a cold wave affecting fuel lines and clothing. Sammer Porter and wife of Northport visited with Mr. and Mrs. Herbert Montague. Porter is a prominent Northport lodge member and Peninsula financier.

A two day music festival unfolds June 17 and 18 during Commencement week in Alma. June 17 features an artists and orchestra program at the Presbyterian church with Miss Clara V. Boles, Miss Harriett McGreaham, and Mr. Carl E. Craven, backed by a 30 piece College orchestra. The evening presents Mendelssohn Elijah by the Choral club orchestra and artists. June 16 offers Gilbert and Sullivan’s Pinafore at the Realty opera house directed by Mr. Wengerd. Forest Hill Shon Commencement Exercises Held at Church
Forest Hill high school held its second annual commencement at the Forest Hill church on May 20. A large audience enjoyed a program featuring prayers, essays, music, and speeches by Rev. Leeland, J. Frank Green, and others, with diplomas conferred by the school board president. Glenn M. Dubois editor of the Charlevoix Courier died at 2 o clock Sunday morning after a long illness of asthma. He was forty years old and lived in Charlevoix the past six years. Esther May Plumb, American contralto, performed a Tuesday evening recital in the College chapel before a large discerning audience.
