Alma residents hail a new venture as AVNA Motor Truck Company forms to manufacture a 1500 unit truck. Francis King presides as president with W W Caple as vice president and C G Rhodes as secretary guiding a board including George Peery Frank Ruggles W M Hogle and Geo W Moore. The firm leases the Alma Manufacturing plant and has orders for materials, signaling rapid production and local economic impact.
The Pere Marquette Railroad Co announces a Sunday train on the Saginaw division. The new schedule took effect Sunday June 22. Westbound through Alma at 8:20 am and 6:30 pm. Eastbound at 10:10 am and 0:15 pm.
The Misses Archette and Berths McClaren hosted public school teachers on Center street Tuesday afternoon with visiting, games, and lawn refreshments. The Hotel Edwards’ household goods were sold at public auction last Saturday afternoon. Mrs Find later and family have moved to Detroit.
A June 14 dispatch states Colonel John Jacob Astor's estate is appraised near 84 million, with Vincent Astor to receive 58,064,400, Mrs. Madeline Force Astor 7,678,806, Muriel Astor 4,856,758, and John Jacob Astor 2,922,672. The appraisal notes the largest estate ever in the U S, details about Ava Willing Astor’s anti-nuptial trust and a large inheritance tax payment yielding a five percent rebate, and breaks down real and personal property values and ownership.
The Pilbeam Amusement company will lease the vacant Alma Roller mills site and arrive Monday afternoon for a seven day stand in Alma. The troupe, transporting about one hundred people, comes by special train from Detroit where eight weeks of performances ended. They bring large tents a Ferris wheel a merry go round and various attractions to entertain visitors.
The Pere Marquette Saginaw Flyer on the Greenville to Grand Rapids route ran at 60 mph last Saturday. A derailment scare occurred when the tender’s rear wheels left the rails, tearing ties for a quarter mile before engineer James Robertson stopped the train. The delay lasted 25 minutes.
At Alma College board meeting Dr Je Liebe Clizbe, longtime biblical literature instructor, tendered his resignation to spend remaining years in less active life. Born in Amsterdam NY and educated at NY colleges, he came to Alma from Mason 16 years ago and served for decades with a salary of 200 a year. Citizens and alumni praise his devotion to Bible study and character guidance.
The senior class staged Shakespeare’s Twelfth Night at the high school auditorium last Monday evening. Amateur cast delivered a bright performance with notable turns by Dick Rock as Sir Toby Belch and Rodney Burgess as Sir Andrew Aguecheek. The five act comedy featured Olivia’s garden set and a full cast list with Orsino, Olivia, Viola, and Maria among others, plus attendants and seamen in a Potter and Olive Smith designed scene.
Supt and Mrs F E Ellsworth hosted a lawn party Tuesday evening for the graduating class high school faculty and board of education members and their wives. Outdoor games were played and refreshments served.
Beginning Sunday July 6 union services will be held each Sunday evening on the Presbyterian church lawn and rotate among city churches. Morning services continue as usual. Inclement weather moves services to the hosting church. The Wright House met with J J Kirby of the Ann Arbor railroad to plan the Gratiot county Sunday school excursion July 20 to Cadillac Crystal Lake and Frankfort with profit sharing among Sunday school representatives.
Bay View announces a five week summer program from July 5 to August 11 with the Assembly and Summer University drawing over 5 000 residents and visitors daily. Notables include William J Burns Madame Seluman Heink and Melville Keller as lectures and performances. The program expands library work in cooperation with Michigan state, with students from 14 states already attending last year.
Prof J T Ewing of Alma College Greek and Latin teacher receives telegram that Wooster University trustees awarded him honorary Doctor of Literature. He could not attend Wooster commencement due to telegram delay. His friends extend congratulations to a long celebrated educator.
Township board orders the roads commissioner to post notices forbidding any automobile or motorcycle speed faster than state law in Arcada Township. Violators will be prosecuted. Dated June 16, 1913. B. F. Cline, Township Clerk.
The High School Alumni association hosts its annual banquet in the high school tonight. Attorney D. L. Johnson will serve as toastmaster, introduced by president John M. Dunham. Alumni speakers include Charles Goggin, Edward Titus, Paul Cash, Ezra L. Smith, F. E. Ellsworth, and Ivan Nelson, visiting from the University of Minnesota, guest of his father, Clinton Nelson.
The Presbyterian church hosted last Sunday evening's valedictory address by Pastor Rye Win to a nine member class. Prof Ellsworth and high school staff attended as music by the Glee Club with Miss Fresham. The speaker warned against waste and mediocrity, urging that intellect and effort determine a man’s worth and the world’s resource use.
A. P. Cook attended Western Reserve College commencement and spoke of a fine time. He noted nine men in the class of 1882, three of whom attended and shared memories from over thirty years ago. In Cleveland he visited his daughter Edith and then spent time with son Robert in Detroit.
Four Presbyterian ministers received doctor of divinity degrees from Alma College. Rev. John Brittan Clark of Westminster Church and Rev. Angus Cameron of Emmanuel Church were honored alongside Rev. T. Ambrose Dunkel of Saginaw and Rev. Aew Johnstone of Cadillac by the college board of trustees.
Alma residents will enjoy top entertainment at Cysta Crystal this summer. The Clarence Bennett company and the Blackaller Bros. company combine to present prime plays each Friday and Saturday night until September openings. Mrs. Chas Johnson of Hilliards visited Alma, hosted by her son Arden. Miss Iena Gould from Owosso visits Alma friends this week.
Telegram to F W Hooper reports the drowning of Boden Florence Ida and Josephine Case after an accident on the river near Edmonton Alberta dated June 26 1913 The text notes no bodies recovered yet says Ever ett saved and promises fuller details next week and extends community sympathy to the Hooper family backed by Edmonton readers.
