Senior Play a Fine Production at Stead

Commencement Exercises at Presbyterian Church

White Shrine Initiates Largest Lodge Class Yet

On Tuesday June 14 the St Alma White Shrine initiated a record 65 new members, 4 in the afternoon and 61 in the evening, a high for any lodge. A dinner for nearly 300 followed at 4 30 with the hall decorated in white and yellow. Grand Worthy Matron Pran tee Hell Watson of the O BE 8 presided and was herself initiated in the evening session.

Baccalaureate Address at Alma College Delights Crowd

Sunday evening President WM Crooks of Alma College delivered a baccalaureate address to the class of 1924 at the Presbyterian church. The sermon emphasized the hurried age and the pace of modern travel from horses to airplanes, urging thoughtful progress and the struggle between materialism and idealism amid world events. The program also included a patriotic meeting in Elka with readings, music, and Rev John A Mulvey’s address about the flag.

Nineteen Seniors Graduated at Alma College Commencement

Alma College held its annual commencement in the chapel with nineteen seniors receiving diplomas. Five honorary degrees were conferred the largest number in a single year. Weston T. Johnson of San Francisco received one, others went to Michigan pastors Rev. William S. Tess, Rev. David J. Sutherland, Rev. George Brewer, and Rev. J. Roy Van Wick. President Crooks announced endowment progress above 400000, gymnasium funding decisions, and remodeling plans. Dean Sara Pollock resigned. Dean Roberts plans to return next year. The program opened with prayer by Rev. James M. Barkley and featured the Girls Glee Club before James Schermerhorn of the Detroit Times spoke on Qui Altars and Qui Pires.

River Water Returns To City Mains In Alma

River water is back in Alma city mains after a brief shift from well water. Officials expect the million gallon reservoir to be ready within sixty days, but state health approval stalled causing a temporary return to river supply. Schools and homes lack pure water while tests awaited approval, delaying a full switch to the new system. The city will skip a Fourth of July celebration this year due to current conditions. Miss Mildred Sweet Weds Ward H Youngquist at Home

Miss Mildred Sweet, daughter of Mr and Mrs L M Sweet, married Ward H Youngquist yesterday at 6:00 pm in her parents home with Rev Gelston officiating. The ceremony, attended by a few relatives, featured fern and rose decor and a blue traveling suit for the bride. The couple will reside in Grand Rapids and Chicago visit plans follow.
