A Sunday morning blaze in Wheeler destroyed the Ed Gazette building, the meat market, and the Breckenridge cream station. The post office and A Johnstone general store were saved after brave volunteer aid from Breckenridge and local fire crews. Citizens praise Breckenridge for prompt help and effective firefighting.
The I O F memorial service was held at the Methodist church Sunday afternoon with Knights of Pythias Pythian Sisters Rebekahs and Royal Neighbors in attendance Ithaca ton as invited guests. Rev T G R Brownlow preached the sermon and the Wright Quartet sang. Afterward the fraternals marched to the cemetery for the ritualistic service and grave decorations.
Alma High School seniors present a light Shakespearean comedy in the school auditorium. Marie Doane Ruth Dutt Mabel Keene and Helen Doane lead as Hermia Helena and the fairies with Ward Hodge Lawrence Hughes William Murphy and others in key roles. Costumes evoke ancient Athens with fairy attire and a six tradesmen final act performance.
The Gratiot County Sunday School Association executive committee met in Breckenridge on June 5 to finalize plans for the September 24 and 25 convention and to identify county Sunday School needs to be conserved. Frank L. Convis Howard L. Holmes Willie G. West and Rev F Gray were named to a program committee.
The W C T U holds a Saturday meeting at 2 30 PM on River Avenue led by Mrs W W Medler with topic Flower Mission Work and Mrs Crandall guiding. The Presbyterian General Assembly endorses a radical anti liquor program with broad praise for National Constitutional Prohibition and church temperance efforts worldwide.
The Eaton Rapids High School 1914 annual The Mascot is dedicated to Foster A Fraker son of Mr and Mrs R J Fraker of the city. The dedication notes Fraker as a coach at Eaton Rapids for two years and praises his energy pep and winning spirit. He has accepted a position with Lapeer public schools for 1914-15.
From Oklahoma, Mr. and Mrs. T. A. Johnston of Okamulgee arrived in Alma on Wednesday and are the guests of Mr. and Mrs. George Sharrar. Mr. Johnston came from Detroit in a seven passenger six cylinder Hudson tour car.
Alma pupils present a $40 leather chair to Prof. Ellsworth Friday morning in appreciation of eight years of teaching. L Hughes, Senior class president, led the presentation with Joe Ford, Don Blaisdell, and Malcolm Smith among the student presidents present.
The Stites express sincere thanks to friends and neighbors for kindness during bereavement and for flowers. Also notes that home grown strawberries are in the market.
College and Schools present programs for Alumni Day and final exercises. Activities include Baccalaureate Address by President Blaisdell, graduation ceremonies, kindergarten and music recitals, Artists Concerts, Senior Promenade, class day with Antigone, and a commencement lunch. Hugo Gottschalk replaced by Miss Helen Mayer due to Chicago orchestra constraints. Mayer praised by Stock and Gottschalk.
The commencement week begins with a bac calaureate service at the Methodist church. Rev J F Jackson will preach the sermon. Monday features the senior class play A Midsummer Night's Dream in the high school auditorium. Tuesday at 2 PM the eighth grade promotion address by Rev T G R Brownlow at the Grammar School. Wednesday hosts the commencement proper with Dr Hoyt of the State Normal Ypsilanti delivering the address. Over thirty graduates are to receive diplomas this year.

A P Ryder announces he will seek the county treasurer nomination at the county primaries. He cites broad Republican support and Elba township’s desire for a candidate on the county ticket, asking for backing from Republicans across the county.
About forty Alma Camp Fire Girls under Misses Corey Fraker Smith and Montigel met Ithaca girls who arrived at noon. The two groups walked to Turk's Woods and held athletic events described as baseball scientific boxing sack races and more. Some girls Angled for funny creatures and a boy scout was used as bait. Lunch was served.
Races at Breckenridge Tuesday attracted spectators from across the county and nearby towns like Saginaw. Pree-for-all winner Eddie Dilland of Vibber Breck took first with Alma runners Alma McNabb second, Time 16 1 4 seconds. Lady Hicok from Alma placed in the judges’ pageant with Vansine timed 2 30. Meadow Boy and Geo Robbins of Alma also earned top spots. Class C results were recorded as correct.
The state tax commission has been in Alma for weeks, raising the assessed valuation of real and personal property by over 60 percent. Officials will provide exact figures to readers after completing their work before visiting St. Louis.
Mayor A P Cook received a letter from Mrs J H Lancashire offering land adjoining the city park for public use. The trifle more than one half acre was used by the Redpath Chautauqua tents last season and comes with the same restrictions as the Wright park deed. Dwight Von Thurn visited St Louis on business with Dr Petit. Mrs E Hanley of Shepherd visited her daughter here this week.
Loera Coffin, daughter of Reuben C. and Paoebe Coffin, born in Lenawee County Michigan March 31 183%. She married Ransom Allen August 3 1856 and had five children. The couple lived on a farm in Emerson township then moved to Ithaca. Mr Allen died last November and Loera died June 6 1914 aged 75 years 2 months 6 days. funeral at Methodist church conducted by Rev J H Wilcox and Rev Beebe with interment at Pine Grove cemetery.
Miss Teada T. Pinney of Ithaca wed Mr. Glenn Mason of Pon- Itiae formerly of Ithaca Sunday at the bride’s parents’ Arcada township home. Forty guests attended as Mendelssohn’s Wedding March opened the ceremony led by Rev. C. L. Beebe. The couple will reside at 30 Palmer Street Pontiac where Mason runs a jewelry business. The bride taught in Alma schools until Easter and received many gifts including money and household items.
Mans for the baseball league are progressing with at least eight clubs planned. Pere Marquette will stop fast trains at Riverdale and Breckenridge to fit the schedule. County Boys Camp moves to early August, likely at Rock Lake near Vestaburg, eight days, four dollars, train accessible, Alma Manufacturing Co. to carry baggage. A. Caspar visits for special work. The Home Lumber and Fuel Company is constructing four cement walled coal sheds east of its office to store about 1000 tons of coal. Nelson Fullerton oversees the project as four sheds rise on a cement floor layout covering 26596 square feet, providing modern storage for fuel.
Announcement states Alma barber shops will shut all day Saturday July 4 1914 due to the St Louis celebration and will stay open until 11:00 p.m. Friday to serve patrons.
A short editorial urges automobile owners to share rides, filling back seats to help those who have never traveled by car. It appeals to kindness, suggests forming an “apill ion of auto owners,” and notes the idea applies to Gratiot County as well.

The Standard Foundry Company is delivering. They shipped 80 stoves to Flint last week and 13,000 pounds of sewer work to Saginaw, plus many small jobs. They employ thirty men and are doing a rushing business.
Mrs Fanny W Krause of Honolulu gave a Saturday evening lecture at the Masonic Home in Alma. She spoke to the O E S and guests for over two hours, sharing 150 views of Hawaii islands, scenery, climate, legends, and history, illustrating why the Island possessions are celebrated.
Alma organized a baseball nine to enter the Hub League. A Saturday night meeting at city hall named a board of directors including Fred Grover Fred Rowland Al Davis J Helman Father Mulvey Chas Gogein and J H McKinney. The board elected J H McKinney president Fred Rowland vice president Karl Adams treasurer A J Archer secretary and Fred Ellicott Hub League delegate. Subscriptions pledges and enthusiasm rise. several college men joined the old city players promising a strong pennant bid.
The Baptist church schedules Children’s Day with a 10 o’clock service titled Children’s Praises featuring music by the Sunday school and recitations by fifteen children. An emblematic piece The Water of Life will be performed. Offering goes to the American Baptist Publication Society.
A recital is set for Friday evening June 12 in the College Chapel by graduates Miss Iva Perrigo Miss Helen Selby and Miss Ruth Halverson from the music course in the Music Building. The program begins at 8 o clock.
