Alma City Council Debates City Marshal Salary Increase

Petitioners urge higher pay for the city marshal and enforcement of laws. Aldermen discuss legality and proper salary amounts, with votes on increases and ordinance to set marshal pay at 40 per month and adjust other official salaries accordingly.

Alma residents oppose salary raise for city marshal

City Clerk Adams read a petition remonstrating against increasing the city marshal salary. Signed by Bert Hayes and others, the remonstrance urged restraint on salaried officers amid alleged liquor law violations. The council laid the petition on the table. The bond of City Treasurer Schwartz was presented and accepted. The old table factory near the P.M. tracks was ordered removed as a fire trap. Bills worth hundreds were approved as the council adjourned near ten o'clock.

North and South sides clash for city baseball title

In a Tuesday battle of Superior street nine, the North side won the city championship over the South. Ben McCullough led the North with Coach Harper and Brown assisting. Ike Fink, a former star, wowed with base running as Chet Walker and Chaggin highlighted the South’s efforts.

Hugh Ferguson of Yale Michigan and Katheryn Andrews of this city married yesterday at Mt Mossant ME church. Bridesmaid Lissie Grover and best man Hert Evans attended. Andrews, a former Union Telephone Co operator, is noted as a popular local, while Ferguson, a college football alumnus, plans Yale as their future home. The Record extends best wishes.

King heads to Chicago for Republican National Convention

Mayor Francis King leaves for Chicago with Michael Brown to represent Michigan's Eleventh District at the Republican National Convention. Headquarters will be in the Auditorium Ames crowed room with up to one hundred dollars asked for admission and each delegate receives one ticket plus their own. King aims to secure additional passes through other sources.

Quiet City Day Amid Rumors of Gang Trouble

City officials report a calm Saturday with 15 000 to 20 000 in attendance. City Marshal Sprague swore in eleven deputies to monitor transients and arrested eleven men for drinking from Tsubolla Co whiskey. One larceny complaint led to recovery of a bed spread and a buggy whip at Emerson township homes as authorities seek settlement. Sprague obtained a search warrant but a barrier hindered its execution. Citizens describe a peaceful day upheld by law.

Mrs Julia Hubert Micham reports the death of her husband Harriett Micham at their cousin's Detroit home. Remains, with Undertaker Con vis, arrived in Alma on Wednesday. Funeral conducted by Father Troy at St Marys church Thursday morning. Born Detroit August 2, 187? married in Detroit June 2, 1804. After moving to Alma they resided there. Husband, mother and brother mourn the loss.

In a probate session on Monday June 6 James W Campbell was named administrator of the Augustine Dora estate and guardian for John Dore minor. Ira Sell heirs were determined by hearing. On Wednesday January 8 John T Swigart was appointed guardian of the person and estate of Penelope Salter. Homer Snider was appointed guardian of Clara Ava Wood, another minor.

Fire destroys hay shed at Alma Elevator hinges sheds

Fire swept a hay shed at Alma Elevator hing sheds just north of the Repet Friday morning about 10. The shed was partly filled with baled hay and the building and contents were burned to the ground. Cause of the fire is unknown.

Sixteen large U S butter manufacturers contest the proposed tariff increase from 6.5 to 12.5 percent for cream and milk shipments before the Interstate Commerce Commission. Lightning Losses and Property Damage Across the State

Heavy lightning strikes have caused widespread damage to farm buildings and property this year, with losses approaching the 1907 record. Despite numerous storms, Michigan reports fewer tornadoes than nearby states, and although rain has been excessive at times, no extreme floods comparable to southern states have occurred.

Pioneer Widow Mrs W Johnson Dies in Alma Area

Notice of Mrs W Johnson's death and funeral details from a Gratiot area community. She lived near Alma for 47 years, was a longtime Methodist member, born March 4 1643 and died June 2 1908. Alma Defeats Albion Eight to One To Win State Championship

Alma captures the state intercollegiate title with an 8 to 1 victory over Albion Friday. Smiling Sidney Johnson pitched superbly for Alma, striking out seven in eleven batters faced while Duncanson and Campbell powered the offense with timely hits and aggressive base running. Albion fought hard from start to finish, but Alma’s defense and Johnson’s sharp curves secured the win as fans crowded the stands.
