The Arena post office will move to the Marshal Dallas block on South State Street as soon as ready. A new building, near the Army House, is under construction but progressing slowly. The change, prompted by growing business, aims to provide ample space for years and aligns with anticipated postwar needs.
Drilling operations for a city water supply have caused shortages in private wells on higher ground. The large Union school ground well across from the bird park is drying as city wells go deeper. Forecasts on continued dryness remain uncertain until all city wells are completed.
Eastminster chapel in the eastern pit Ale ma was formally dedicated Sunday afternoon. A notable audience heard Prof. Chahe of Alma College offer the dedicatory prayer and Rev. George B. Stewart deliver the dedicatory address. The new chapel, completed some months prior, drew a large turnout and left a strong impression on attendees.
Brigas, a former St Louis Bay News employee, recounts a clash between a merchant ship and a German submarine en route to the country. In his Minnesota Journal story he notes the sub fired torpedoes, the merchant ship crew disabled and monitored the sub, and he reports business in Europe proceeds as usual, perhaps better than before the war.
On Sunday H Payton drove speeding near West Superior Street and witnessed by Marshal Rogers. Taylor was arrested Monday, hired Marcus Pollasky for defense, and a jury trial ensued. After deliberation the six jurors found Taylor exceeded the speed limit. he was fined $10 and warned of possible further consequences. Taylor paid the fine and is connected to Republic Motor Track Company.
Alma College announces twenty two graduates will receive degrees at the commencement exercises. Rev Charles Wishart of Chicago and Rev George Stewart of Auburn Seminary will address the audience along with Harriet Virtum of Northwestern Settlement. Degrees awarded include A B to a list of named graduates from Alma, Petersburg, Midland, Hastings, Spring Lake, Traverse City, and other nearby towns. The baccalaureate sermon will be by H M Crooks and the commencement address by Rev Charles F Wishart with honorary degrees expected to be conferred.
A former Republic company band from Alina Michi Wie headquarters in Loriginal Republic travels the nation in a private Pullman to support enlistment drives and Red Cross fundraising. They perform at Kimwood Music Hall in Buffalo with a violin soloist a tenor soloist and a double quartet. all proceeds go to the Red Cross.
Alma theatergoers enjoy two final nights as the Whitney Stock Company performs dramatic works near the Alma Rotunda Milla east of Alma. Detroit trip prize offered. H Darwin Dam promotes the attractions at Hotel Arcada.

Grav itet county Red Cross announces a county wide drive to recruit 5 000 members across Gratiot county. Campaign runs Saturday and Sunday June 28 and 25 in markets cities and villages with local units forming soon. Membership is 8100 per year for all ages. Mrs Franke Smith a leading Peninsula figure died suddenly while driving to the city. She suffered an apoplexy near Sea Gull Nurse on the peninsula and died before a doctor arrived. Her husband died four years ago. She leaves two sons Frank of Alma and Ralph whose home is unknown. Funeral arrangements to be announced. Traverse City Rovard Eagle June 2.
Alma’s Sons Show Solid turnout as young men join the county draft registration in Gratiot. Ward returns and totals hint the county may post lower figures than expected, with Detroit and Lansing areas contributing heavily to statewide counts. The Alma Record will publish a full county tally next week and state results are incomplete. Draft timing and county estimates suggest the drive could wrap by late June or early July.
Philadelphia North American notes that grain for liquor in the United States could produce 11,000,000 loaves of bread daily, enough to feed France, Great Britain, and America combined over a year. Belgium could be fed for a year with the grain diverted to whiskey.
Professor Otto W. Hedges of Almas College tendered resignation to the Board of Trustees after two years at Alma. He has been offered a fine position in a large Detroit high school and will leave to pursue his chosen line.
George B. Watson a prominent Alma resident died at his Gratiot avenue home after a weeks illness. Born in Ontario April 28 1867 he worked for Alma Grain Lumber and Swift and Company before settling in Alma. He leaves a wife and daughter and several relatives. funeral Tuesday at St. Marys church with interment Riverside cemetery. The brief obituary notes his Detroit childhood and recent illness. The recital report highlights a successful Alma College concert featuring Miss Bradner and Mr Austin with accompaniment by Mrs Replogle.
Breckenridge captured first place at the county meet by a single point over Alma, claiming top honors in a tight team competition.
Alma High wins the relay as St Louis and Alma fail to match Breckenridge and Ithaca in a county finals meet held Friday. Haw Wheaton and Breckenridge surprise in multiple events with top placings. details include high jump, discus, shot put, hurdle, and sprints.
