Memorial Day observance at Riverside cemetery tribute to fallen heroes

School civic groups and citizens gathered at Riverside cemetery for a Memorial Day service. Apor axelvanus played a dirge. Florence Coates recited The Widow's Mite. music by a mixed quartet and high school chorus. Flags placed, graves decorated, and the Star-Spangled Banner honored the dead. ALA and community groups thanked volunteers, the Alma Bane forester, and the fire department for support.

Destructive Fire Destroys Alma Planing Mill and Sash Factory

A Wednesday afternoon blaze at Tinker and Hannah’s planing mill and sash factory in Alma caused near total destruction. Fire started in the engine room, workers barely escaped, and the fire department saved adjoining properties while the mill’s machinery and dry kiln suffered heavy loss. A. W. Wright’s mill property valued at about 12000 and Tinker & Hannah losses around 1500 with minimal insurance. Several employees reported personal losses including watches and tools. The firm faced halted operations with contracts worth over 310,000 at stake, and town hopes for a quick rebuild and full restoration remain.
