Gratiot County Gas Plant Near Alma Start Date

Gratiot County Gas Co will put gas into municipal mains within three weeks with August 10 as the first service date for Alma households. Main and secondary lines rapidly advance, the plant buildings near completion, and a network planned to extend to St. Louis Ithaca Breckenridge and surrounding farming areas. The project includes modern offices, storage tanks, and an emphasis on worker comfort plus a strong push for schools and community services linked to the gas venture. The plan also mentions the American Gas Construction Co handling erection and a Six and Six school plan being piloted in Michigan with broader adoption elsewhere.

Oil Ignited Fire Hurts Alma Grain Engineer

Mr John Haner chief engineer of Alma Grain and Lumber Co suffered severe burns to face and arms after oil poured into a furnace back fired last Saturday evening. He mistakenly used oil instead of water to cool a cylinder head, oil burst from the door as drafts were closed. He called superintendent W W Medler who helped Dr Lamb dress the burns. He will be off work at least two weeks recovering and narrowly escaped eye loss.

Nine year old falls from tree on Ely street

Arthur R Hole aged nine climbed a maple tree on Ely street last Thursday. He sat on a limb about fifteen feet high with several friends in the tree. He fell and broke both forearms above the wrists. Dr Suydam set the bones and the boy rests. Mrs C Harding returned to Durand Tuesday after visiting Mrs E Rumsey.

Mrs Margaret Oberlin Dies After Illness at 56

Mrs. Margaret Oberlin aged 56 of Lombard avenue died at midnight Sunday after months with cancer. Born in Gratiot county she married Simeon Oberlin at sixteen. They moved to Owosso last year from Forest Hill. Survived by husband two brothers and three sisters. Funeral at home Tuesday 1 30 pm, Alma interment.

SIX AND SIX PLAN FOR MICHIGAN HIGH SCHOOLS

The Michigan Department of Public Instruction will publish an August suggestive Course of Study for high schools. It outlines four lines: college preparatory agriculture domestic arts and commercial. The plan urges earlier pathways splitting elementary and high schools at seventh grade to curb early dropouts.

Edmore resident Edwinc Wagar well known in Alma died at his Edmore home last Wednesday at 1 30 A M He directed Union Telephone Company served two terms in the state legislature and was on major committees He belonged to the Board of Control Traverse insane hospital and active Methodist Episcopal Church leader He married Louise Pfeifer in 1875 and leaves a wife a son and a daughter two sisters and a brother Kidney troubles caused death Funeral services were held Sunday afternoon.

George Sheldon Dies After Long Illness at 83 on Grover Avenue

George Sheldon aged 83 lies seriously ill at home on Grover Avenue as a general breakdown from old age. A long county resident, he outlives a wife who died last February and several children. Friends and relatives hold little hope for recovery. Mrs Nora Preter is his daughter. Joe Ford and Arlo Eckert visited Paul Herrod in Mhaca Monday.

Runaway wagon crashes. Frank Walter of Emerson dies

Franklin A Walter, 54, of Emerson Township, was killed in Ithaca when his team ran away on Centre Street. He tried to steady the long timber wagon, but the wheel crushed his head at the curb. The accident occurred near Pine River Street and the Ithaca National Bank corner. The coroner ruled it an accident. no inquest.

Excursion North train turnout thin amid weekend sales

Excursionists from Alma joined travels to Frankfort on Saturday and Sunday with seven on Saturday and eleven on Sunday. Four went to Cadillac and six to intermediate points. Despite bargains offered, few accepted the trips for vacation travel.

Band Concert in City Park Shocks and Delights Crowd

Mosco the wild man impressed over five hundred attendees at a Band and Baseball concert in the city park Tuesday evening. The event featured two side show tents a courtroom and a military band while barkers and ice cream vendors added carnival atmosphere. Judge Jake Helman presided as arrests and fines were issued to several attendees including Simon Mesinger Karl Adame and others for various offenses.

Remarkable Birthday Gathering At South Jefferson Avenue

Summer Training School Week at Alma College

The Summer Training School for Sabbath School Workers opened with a 6:30 banquet and address by President Blaisdell at Wright Hall, hosted by Alma College trustees with about 200 visitors. Rev. Walter Russell led Bible study each morning, outlining Apollos and Saul as models, while Dr Verhuyl led Teacher Training, and Miss Taft and Miss Brechin spoke on church life and temperance.

Duluth Dance Expert Miss Stoughton Visits Alma

Miss Stoughton, director of Physical Training for Women in Duluth Public Schools, is a guest of Aunt Mrs. W. H. Parr in Alma. Alma Beats Clare 6 to 4 at Home in Tuesday Match

Alma defeated Clare at home by six runs to four. Pitchers Johnson and Allen started for Alma and the lineup matched the Mt. Pleasant game. Bleamaster umpired with Mrs Aptograph of St. Louis and her husband called to George Sheldon’s home Friday. Floyd Oswald played for a Central Normal School dance Friday evening.

Alma Encampment Attends Stanton Meeting and Initiation

A group from Alma’s Encampment accepted an invitation to Stanton Encampment’s meeting last Friday evening at Stanton. Four Fords carried twenty members to Montcalm Co. city for supper. The party included W. W. Medler and two candidates M. Martin and J. A. Wheeler, with many others. The Stanton Encampment helped with the initiation of the two candidates after a fine dinner, then the group returned home with the first car reaching Alma at four o’clock Saturday morning and the last about an hour later.
