U S Warships Engage Irene as Insurgents Report Sabig Bay
On July 6 insurgents informed Admiral Dewey that the German gunboat Irene in Sabig bay blocked their attack on Grande Island. Rear Admiral Dewey sent the Raleigh and Concord to probe. Raleigh opened fire on the forts. Irene slipped her cable and fled. Spanish forces, over 500 men, surrendered.

Free Text Book Debate, Trustee Elections At Meeting
A large crowd gathered to vote on adopting the 1849 free text book law or risk 1807 state control.
