Alma Fourth Fest Opens With Parades At Alma

Midnight fireworks and crackling caps ushered Alma’s Fourth celebration. A grand parade formed at State Street and Wright House, featuring the St. Louis Band and Alma fire department, then moved to Sturtz’s grove for exercises including the Declaration read by C. E. Scott and an oration by Chas. McKinney.

Community celebration caps day with sport events and fireworks

Tinker won the running broad jump with Bradford taking the standing broad jump. Floyd Glass won the fat men’s prize while Longwell claimed first money and Fred Hooper shared second with Campbell. Scotney of St Johns and Stone of Ithaca won bicycle prizes. Two riders were injured crossing sidewalks. Carrollton beat St Louis 15 to 11 in a ball game. Balloon ascent delayed by wind, then a success. Firemen’s gun and bayonet drill drew applause on the Church block. Fireworks impressed, though the Maine piece misrepresented. St Louis and Ithaca bands performed. crowd sizes rival Barnum’s. Organizers praised for an excellent, memorable day.

From Camp Eaton on Isnasp Lake July 5 1808 a letter notes 108 campers with two late arrivals and 119 in total 30 failed the U S surgeon exam in Pentwater Co. The Midland Co reports four daily drills 530 am 800 am 230 pm and 740 pm practice guns arrived as the neatest company. Recounted athletic events wrestling boxing jumping high kicking tents measure ten by twelve with six non commission officers.
