First Expedition Sails For Porto Rico Under Gen. Wilson

Reports from July 20 describe Maj. Gen. J. H. Wilson leading the first brigade of the first division of the first army corps aboard ships bound for Porto Rico. The force includes the Second and Third Wisconsin, the Sixteenth Pennsylvania, and units from the Sixth Illinois and Sixth Massachusetts. Crowded docks erupt in cheers as bands play. Nearby Santiago notes friendly mingling of former enemies and easing yellow fever fears. Camp Bates Michigan notes the Thirty-fifth Michigan nearly complete, with two companies yet to muster, while the Thirty-first Michigan is expected to depart for Porto Rico later in the week.

Grand Wedding at St John’s Alma Miss DeRussy Marries Mr Sickel

In Alma at St John’s Episcopal Church on Thursday July 21 at noon, Miss Emily Caroline DeRussy wed Mr John Trast Sickel with Chicago and Detroit guests in attendance. Rev HB Jefferson officiated as ushers and heat man assisted. the bride wore white satin and chiffon. reception at Saravilia followed by departure to Detroit on the 4.90 Ann Arbor train. The couple will live in Chicago after an extended wedding tour.

A trooper writes from camp describing daily routines, meals, and drill, praising rations and warmth, noting scarce hardtack but good bread. He discusses early mornings, mounted and foot combat training, and hopes for active service soon.
