Early days of Dr A F Bruske at Alma College

Alma Michigan July 1 2007 Dear Editor Records Attracted by Texas Panhandle climate soil and agricultural prospects I joined a party from Des Moines Iowa to Dalhart Texas for a firsthand investment survey. The Panhandle rides a high dry plateau with rich pastures and large cattle herds along with water wells and fertile crops including wheat Kaffir corn milo and alfalfa. The writer extols mild malaria free climate and robust health benefits, praising sparse humidity and reliable water depths while noting abundant rainfall during growing season and favorable stock markets in Kansas City and Fort Worth.

Death of Miss Nellie Pike in Michigan

Miss Nellie Elberta Pike daughter of William and Amanda Pike was born May 1 1870s near Ionia Michigan and died in June 100. She lived in Gratiot county Alma Belding Lakeview and Asia areas before becoming ill with consumption. Funeral was held at the family home west of Alma with services by Rev E G Pelley and Rev Clapp. Many relatives and friends attended and interment followed at Riverside cemetery Alma.

Parade Street Closure For July Fourth Sports Event

After the parade on July 4, Superior Street from City Hall to Hotel Arcada will be roped off all day. No teams may enter that stretch to ensure free access for the sports shown on the program.

The Shepherd Canning Co. name change followed fourteen stockholders buying interests. A. W. Wright, T. N., Shepherd, F. H. Ballinger, N. W. Struble, M. H. J. D. Bent, A. E. Clark and W. I. Dibble elected a board. Out of debt, but factory plans uncertain due to market prices for tomatoes and corn and possible fruit canning this year.

Man Adjudged Insane After Troubled Run in Traverse City

Wesley Stanton, alias Deafy Stanton, was declared insane by a lunacy commission last Saturday and taken to Traverse City asylum. He caused a five minute struggle during arrest, had a history of delusions including the Russian Empress in his home, and lived in squalor with deteriorating health. Neighbors complained of danger, and his house showed extreme filth. Stanton, 44, has wandering habits and earnings from odd jobs. His home was sold for $1000 and ownership shifted to L. Congin and Andrew Shaw, who will take possession.

Sumner Grange Meeting Notes June 1907

Sithiner Grange met at the Summer % A KR on Sunday evening June 9 1907 with 19 officers and 11 members present. The Master called the meeting to order the Grange sang America a bill for state dues portage and tablet was approved an order drawn. Flora spoke on Montcalm Co Pomona meeting and the program for July 15 was announced with songs recitation and questions. About fifty attendees enjoyed ice cream and cake afterward.

In Isabella county D H Tibbitts of Fremont township lost cattle to hydrophobia and a barn fire followed while a second cow died after veterinary delay. He plans to seek state board auditors for compensation. Also reported is a quiet June 19 wedding at AD Clark's residence in North Star uniting Mite Durr Clark and Avlie Azelborn with Rev F E Chamberlain officiating.
