Commencement Exercises At Local High School

The high school commencement was held in the opera house Friday evening at eight o clock. The hall was decorated by Juniors and packed despite the heat. President E Lancaster of Olivet College spoke. Program included a prayer, chorus, address by President Lancaster, quartet, diploma presentation, and benediction.

Blue Ribbon Meet Promises Greatest Detroit Driving Club Event

The Detroit Driving Club plans the Blue Ribbon Meeting beginning July 22 with the Chamber of Commerce 5000 pacing stake and the 3000 Horseman stake for 2:18 trotters. The M. & M. pace, second race on day two, and a free for all pace on day three highlight fifteen events across three afternoons with top speed and strong fields expected.

Tuscola county adopts new method for drain commissioner election

A new law passed by the legislature and approved by Governor Warner changes how Tuscola County elects its drain commissioner. Elections in April 2008 and every two years after will choose a commissioner whose two year term starts May 1. The officer must file oath, post a 10000 bond, and reside at the county seat with records kept there. A deputy may be appointed with a 2000 bond and county salaries set at 1000 annually plus up to 300 for expenses.

Alma Hustler Brings Chas Goggin to Michigan Graduation

Chas Goggin of Alma completed his University of Michigan degree joining the 1903 class. He entered in 1904 to study law, pursued literary work, and participated in debating and athletics with the Webster club and the wrestling team. He was admitted to practice in the Michigan Supreme Court last Saturday and to practice in the district and circuit courts of the United States at Detroit and Port Huron on Tuesday.

Fire scare saves Alma farm buildings near Riverdale

While driving from Alma to Riverdale on Friday N W Struble and an Alma petitioner saved a barn and likely other structures from fire. Sparks from the smoke stack set the barn roof alight near a portable saw mill east of Riverdale but mill workers were busy until Struble called them. The crew brought water and extinguished the blaze.

Trustees Annual Meeting and Commencement Events Summary

Trustees held an annual meeting at the Wethe chapel with speeches by Adelbert Lindley and Ruth Mathews on civic topics, plus a review of student essays and performances. The Wednesday evening Senior Promenade lit the campus, and Thursday morning’s commencement in the chapel featured valedictory by Miss Bagley, followed by a Wright Hall banquet with toasts from alumni and faculty.

Confusion Reigns as Michigan Legislature Closes Session

The Michigan Legislature ends its regular session amid near pandemonium in the House. Members cleared desks, hurled papers, and failed to advance key bills. The chamber passed a $25,000 appropriation for a Gen. Gh. B. Oyster monument and authorized a capital annex plan, while other measures stalled. The session adjourned at 1:40 PM after a long day of clashes and disorder.

Sparrow bounty payments reduce sparrow numbers in county

Last October the board of supervisors set a two cent bounty per English sparrow scalp. County Treasurer Milliken has paid 621.24 in orders since then, 86.46 before January 1 and 524.78 from then to June 15. The bounty implies 91.66 percent of birds were killed in under nine months, with sparrows now scarce in towns that once housed them.

Intercollegiate League formed in Michigan debate revival

A Grand Rapids dispatch reports the creation of a new intercollegiate debating league in Michigan. Kalamazoo Olivet and Alma reps formed a league, with Herman N Morse of Alma elected president. Two equal teams per school, annual questions, six teams meet the same night, half the teams debate affirmative, prizes promised to raise debate standards.
