Alma City Looks to 1920 With Sewer Plans and Hospital Talks

Alma contemplates extensive municipal work in 1920 including bids for 23,000 feet of eight inch sewer lines and 100 manholes, after state health board approval. Double Salvation Army Wedding at Presbyterian Church

A double wedding was held last Saturday evening at the Presbyterian church under Salvation Army auspices. George Clayton Cowles and Elsie Laura Rogers wed, joined by Samuel Vere Ferris and Claudia Pearl Deming with attendants. The ceremony featured a Fred F. Smith solo, a flower girl, ring bearer, and a reception at the Salvation Army hall after speeches by brides and captains.

Locals Win In Lopsided High School Basketball Victory

Alma defeats St Louis hidh on their home floor 34 to 1 in a rough game marked by poor shooting. Key players Creech and Lyons struggled, while Plaeway shone for Alma with strong interior work and team defense. Substitutions and early fouls influenced the pace as Alma led 20 to 6 at halftime.

Gas Company Proposition Before City Commission Again

The Gratiot County Gas company's plan to guarantee a seven percent return to borrow funds for service and capacity upgrades was discussed by the city commission again Tuesday evening but no action was taken. City manager William E. Reynolds continues an investigation of the company’s finances and is expected to present findings soon, with action anticipated on the company’s request.

Alma College trustees wrap midyear meeting actions

Alma College trustees held the midyear session in the president’s office. They approved a 4 percent salary increase for instructors and raised tuition by 20 dollars per year to 800, with the next school year starting at 800. They also approved student control in activities for a two year trial and planned a joint publicity and financial campaign among Alma, Adrian, Albion, Hillsdale, Hope, and Kalamazoo colleges. Resignations of Seeley, Stalker, and Chatfield were accepted, with Chatfield remaining treasurer until a successor is found. The board elected James Barkley as chairman, Francis King as vice chair, Albert Cook secretary, and Chatfield treasurer. Several trustees attended from nearby cities. A separate note mentions a Harrison area petition to extend electric service from Central Michigan Light & Power, affecting a municipal plant already serving light and water. Will Erect Funeral Home In Alma On State Street

G Vernon Wright, a noted furniture dealer and funeral director, announced plans to buy the Masonic lot on State street and build a modern two story brick and concrete funeral home with a basement and chapel. The project includes a residence, casket display room, embalming and receiving areas, private and main offices, a vapor heating plant, and an elevator connecting all levels. Wright will keep the current furniture store in Merchants’ block and the new building will be the area’s most modern funeral establishment.

Gratiot County Boys Conference Set For January 20

The Gratiot County Yo M C plans a three day conference in St Louis from January 20 to February 1. Delegates aged fourteen to eighteen from local M C units will attend with a program including banquets addresses and basketball tournaments. Delegates pay 1.00 to cover banquet tickets and a 26 to 50 cent balance on arrival.

City of Alma launches at Bristol amid Alma delegation

A large Alma delegation witnessed the christening of the S. S. City of Alma at Bristol on January 14. Officials toured the dry docks, viewed the ship’s fittings, and celebrated with a champagne christening before returning to Philadelphia. The war era fabrications are oil fueled, with plans to join a U.S. Shipping Board fleet once completed.

Painting of Wright Gifted to Alma College Unveiled

A painting of Ammi W Wright, founder and major benefactor of Alma College, was unveiled in the chapel by De J T Ewing. The event drew faculty, trustees, students, and friends as speakers lauded Wright’s business acumen and philanthropy while noting ongoing fundraising for a science hall. The piece, painted by M Gaugengig of Boston, is valued over £2000 though exact figures were not published. Local officials and Rev Louis Brooks delivered remarks and the ceremony closed with a prayer.

Alma State Savings Bank Increases Capital and Elects Woman Director

The Alma State Savings Bank boosted capital from 40000 to 250000 and re elected the board while appointing Mrs Mary C Bahike to replace Dr Bagley who is away. The bank will add a new vault stretch across the south end and move bookkeeping to the second floor with internal stairs.
