Alma eighth graders prepare for January 23 promotion exercise

Albert W. Canada Dies at 72 After Illness
Albert W. Canada of Maple avenue died Monday noon after months of illness. A Civil War veteran born in Pennville Tadiana he lived in the city only a few years. Survived by his wife, one son, and one daughter. Masonic and M E church services were held at the home yesterday afternoon with Past Master Howard Lake officiating at the cemetery.

VOTE ON LEAGUE College Students and Faculty Desire a Compromise
Alma College students and faculty joined 700 other colleges voting on four League of Nations questions. A large majority backed a compromise between Lodge and Democratic forces to facilitate ratification, with votes showing 107 for compromise and 28 for ratification in any form.

Change In State Highway Between Alma and Ithaca
The state highway department suggests moving the center line east one mile from the present route and then west two miles into Alma, creating a north south trunk line with two parallel roads between Ithaca and Alma. The center line will run north from Ithaca for six miles then west into Alma, with the former state road likely continued as a township road. This may yield two trunk lines for Alma and pave the eastward segment eventually. A Mt Pleasant high school debate team defeated Alma High on universal military training with Alma supporting the plan and Mt Pleasant opposing. The Alma team argued the need for preparedness and a strong Navy. Mt Pleasant argued it would foster militarism and harm Americanization.

Big Republic Truck Display Dominates New York Show
At the New York Automobile Show last week the Republic Motor Truck Company of Alma showcased twelve trucks making a broad display. The lineup included four chassis and featured a chemical fire truck, lumber roller, track bus, horizontal dump and oil tank plus two new farm oriented models an orchard spray and a versatile 10 combination truck. The display drew dealers buyers and sightseers and generated several orders expected to grow after the event. Beet growers meet planned in Ithaca January 20 2020 at 1 00 pm with state committee and outside speakers to discuss conditions.

New Alma School Proposal Faces Crowded Conditions
Alma public schools face severe overcrowding as the Washington building and high school approach capacity. Proposals include enlarging the high school with an eastward addition plus a new ward building, or tearing down Washington to build a large central high school and convert the current high school into a junior building.
