Alma Board backs $600000 endowment drive for Alma college

Alma Board of Trade resolutions express strong support for a campaign to raise 600000 to strengthen Alma college endowment and facilities. The community body pledges time energy and funds, aiming to mobilize thousands of Michigan donors and showcase widespread local backing for the effort. Separately a lawsuit seeks 10000 from John L Campbell over an alleged offense involving a farmer’s daughter, with bond of 5000 required. A second suit, by Harry A Grandy, seeks 250 damages over alleged illegitimate relations with Campbell’s young daughter.

Stanley to lecture on Folk Songs at Alma Chapel

Dr Albert A Stanley head of the Michigan music department will lecture on Folk songs Friday evening January 14 in the Alma College chapel. He formerly headed the National Federation of Music Teachers and will be introduced by selections on the piano. Admission is free and all are invited. This is the third concert in Alma Music Club's series.

Republic Band To Play Two Big City Concerts

The Republic band of about forty players will shift this week’s concerts from Wednesday and Thursday to Friday and Saturday, starting at 7:15 each evening. The group, featuring musicians from Creature's band Robinson's Dun bar's and others, has trained five to six hours daily for the past fortnight and travels to Detroit next week. The program includes pieces by Vivaldi, Dvorak, and standard band numbers with soloists Miss Ida Quencer and others, under Director F. J. Major.

Taxes Coming Slow For Alits Taxpayers In 19th Century Notice

The city of Alits reports total taxes due this year at 05,840.04 with only 5,385.12 paid, leaving one fifth unpaid. City Treasurer Charles R. Murphy notes four percent interest accrues after May. Many taxpayers appear unable to pay on time due to high living costs. Last year’s total tax was 08,000.00 and collections were 4,044.57 with 3277.74 in interest. Riverdale Fire Destroys Several Businesses

Riverdale woke to a major blaze last Friday morning that wiped out three storefronts on Main Street. Lew Rhodes and Lew Looker were badly burned, with Rhodes suffering severe burns on his back and chest. Dewey Apple sustained facial and hand injuries. Australian beet worker threatens village with shotgun in wagon city

Joe Hairpin an Australian beet worker living in a housewagon on the riverbank near the village end of town threatened to shoot the area and fired a shotgun through his door during the incident. Marshal Rogers responded and Hairpin was detained. No charges yet. investigators may pursue later. Meanwhile J. W. Miller’s ice business property on the riverbank was sold to I. M. Yer. Yer plans repairs and expansion, aiming to boost local ice trade.

New Coal Company Planned in Alma With Sheds Erection

A new coal company in Alma is planned after a deal this week. Frank Carnicon of St. Louis leased ground from James Redman & Sons on East Superior Street for coal sheds. The site lies east of the railroad spur into the lobby McNeil & Libby and Republic Trick plant. Work will be charted on the sheds or anew.

Alma High School dropped a 82 to 71 decision to Grand Rapids Union after a tough first half and a late rally. Howe led Alma with support from Mann Campbell Medier and Smith as Union pulled away in the second period and withstood Alma tackles in a close finale.

Burgess Fractures Thigh and Wrist in Roof Accident

William Burgess, Alma carpenter, fell from a roof on a icy day last Monday injuring his left thigh and right wrist. A doctor said the injuries are serious and will keep him from work for some time.
