A crowd in Elwell Gratiot County gathered around 10 30 p m Saturday for a so called friendly row after a businessman suggested running a saloon. The melee left black eyes and masked faces as deputies investigated with many participants gone by the time authorities arrived. The village vows no repeat of the disturbance.
The Women’s Relief Corps installed officers on January 2. An oyster supper for 53 members and guests followed. Officers: President Martha Gleason, Senior Vice Cora Lewis, Junior Vice Amelia Wilber, Treasurer Martha Walker, Secretary Martha Fraker. Chaplain Cornelia Day, Conductor Hattie Davis, Asst Conductor Maggie Hutchings, Guard Gladys Gray, Asst Guard Mrs Scheidler. Color Bearers Mesdames Sharp, Robinson, Rahl, Rollin. Patrol Instructor Emma Struble, Press Correspondent Maryette Hawley.
Commissioner Redman hires ex State representative Clifton J. Chambers to handle office work while Redman assists with surveying. Chambers brings countywide familiarity and geography knowledge to expedite new drains and extensions. Miss Fleming of the Gratiot County Herald visited Ala. George Sharrar was in the county seat. A diphtheria case at the Cosner residence on Second Avenue.
At 3 o'clock Wednesday morning Mrs Fred Creech woke to a bright light. The barn on the E Creech farm burned completely with hay grain and farm implements lost. Mr Creech rescued a team of horses across the road. Loss estimated 1500 to 2000 dollars. Origin unknown as Vandermark's contract awaits March possession.
The Republican County Convention to select delegates for the State Convention in Lansing on February 11 is set for Tuesday February 4 at Ithaca. It will convene at eleven in the forenoon. Dr. Lamby of Alma was observed on our streets Saturday.
About seventy five men from across the county met at the U. CA hall in Ithaca to discuss telephone service. Discussion covered contracts, ownership of lines, and a plan to form a cooperative independent company with state charter, selling stock at 25 dollars a share to fund extended lines and fair rates, with profits by service rather than profit.
Thomas J. Lyon 1848 1904 resident of Grat Iot County died January 9 at 7 90 p m age 56 was born in Jackson county educated at Ypsilanti 1867 taught in Washtenaw and Gratiot counties before turning to farming in Seville township served as township clerk and justice of the peace married December 1872 to a Miss Lyon he leaves wife three daughters Earl J died in 1904 at 16 sisters Mrs Rena Decker and Mrs Louisa Ausin brother Milton Lyon of Detroit funeral at the M E church Sunday at 2 p m conducted by Rev W E Doty attendance from many relatives and friends with tales of family in Michigan Nebraska Alberta and Dakota connections.
At the annual stockholders meeting on Saturday evening January 11 the entire Board of Directors was reelected for another year. A large attendance and perfect harmony marked the event. The company capitalization rose from ten thousand to twenty five thousand dollars and the limit of individual holdings increased from two hundred fifty to one thousand dollars.
Change of meeting night announced for the Mayer Post G A R with regular gatherings moved to the second and fourth Wednesdays at the G A R hall. The next meeting is set for Wednesday evening in January. Mrs Herbert Montague returns from Traverse City with guests Mr and Mr P Carver staying at the Masonic Home. Mrs McPhee enjoys a surprise visit from friends from Mr Pleasant and St Louis.
Men's Bible class at the M. E. church reported receipts over 61 dollars to date with 98 dollars to Sunday school and 15 dollars in expenses leaving a balance over 10 dollars. New permanent committees were named for Membership Visitation and other roles, with leadership by Prof. H. M. McCurdy and others. A federation committee for Alma was appointed, and oil and gas land leases in Gratiot county were noted as being recorded, mainly from Elba township.
The Gratiot County Farmers Institute will meet in Ithaca January 20 and 21 1913 in the county building court room. President A J Dicken and Secretary J B Miller lead the County Society with L R Taft and A B Cook among organizers. The program lists talks on orchard care beans as a money crop good roads in Michigan concrete on the farm breeding horses and rural education with music and discussions throughout both days.
From Sunny Florida A J O Boyle writes of Orlando in mid February 1994 noting warm sun and plentiful citrus. He reports seven packing houses in Orlando and 7000 boxes daily, oranges and grapefruit abundant, prices for pork and beef, land values, and the Orlando Fair starting February 18. He mentions the Alma Record arrival, Mr Joslin’s death, and plans to return home via Chattanooga in March.
City Treasurer F C Grover collected 85 percent of the total tax amounting to 62078 28 before the with day of January when the collection fee of four percent was added He will now pursue the remaining 15 percent and hopes to have it in the city treasury before the county settlement in March
A baby girl arrived for Mr and Mrs C G Rhodes last night and a baby girl for Mr and Mrs John Luetini on Woolworth Ave yesterday. Mr and Mrs Sidebothan welcomed a baby boy born yesterday at the home of his grandfather F W Hooper.
Alma residents are asked to meet faculty members to discuss evening classes at Alma College. Organizers aim to start next week if demand exists. Subjects will match community needs and credits count toward degrees where earned. Contact President Maisdet or any faculty member if interested.
In California, Misses Emily and Elizabeth Case left Alma on Saturday January 4 heading for Pasadena where they plan to spend the remainder of the winter months.
Arcadia Farmers' club gathered December 6 at Mr. and Mrs. C. F. Hainline’s home. After a bountiful dinner, officers were kept for another year. Delegates’ report from the state meeting was shared, with the balance to be given later. A brief program followed and plans were made to meet January at George Irash’s, with songs, readings, recitations, a paper, and a question box.
Allan Hubbell chaired the Arcada Grange Farmers Institute last Wednesday afternoon where Me. KN Moore of Wixom spoke on alfalfa. He argued alfalfa grows on soils where alfalfa thrives with inoculation, noted higher feed value than clover and even wheat bran in dairy rations, and recommended mixing with orchard grass for horses. He cited Nebraska’s 33 year alfalfa history and urged silos and balanced rations for cows producing 25 pounds of milk.
The speaker argues Michigan’s education system wastes funds and fails to prepare students for practical work. He cites eight grades as insufficient, low college completion, and a misaligned curriculum, urging a top–down reform to emphasize practicality over culture. Continued on page a.
