Lieutenant Governor John Q. Ross of Muskegon announces keynote get together approach guiding appointments this session. Senator King of the 25th district named chair of Education and Public Schools and Gaming Interests, plus seats on several other committees.
Southwest New Haven district nine opened after a two week vacation with a cleaned schoolhouse and new articles noted by the teacher. Local residents and families, including Hoxie, Jeff, Alma Young, A Boyd, Willis Plant, Amos Button, Archie MecKinstrey, Esterday, and Crystal, shared holiday visits and New Year dinners with relatives such as Albert Young, D C Collins, Richard Eastman, Leon Lowek, Tem ple Michigan ties appearing in a series of family gatherings and trips to Chicago.
Elwell elevator stockholders will meet Saturday evening January 10 for an annual election of officers. Local residents Harry Tubbs and family returned home from Eaton Rapids Wednesday. Several social visits noted including Hi Collister and wife of Lainesbury. Elwell school started Monday and other small town motions fill the local page.
Committees appointed by county organizations meet at the Y M C A rooms in Ithaca on Monday January 13 at 2 pm to sign agreements with phone users they represent. The aim is to negotiate with companies and settle the telephone question satisfactorily through county cooperation.
The Lincoln Farmers' club meets with Mr and Mrs Earl Miller in Montcalm County two miles west and one mile north of Lacey school on Friday January 10 1913 at 10 am. The Civic League met at Mrs. Francis King's home on Friday January third at three o clock. Mrs. Caple was absent as president and Mrs. Fosworth was elected president for the year with other officers named. Reports highlighted fourteen meetings, moving the reading room, shade tree examination, school flower projects, a high school building effort, and city improvements, plus thanks to Mayor Montigel and the city council. The resignation of Mrs Caple was noted with gratitude.
Monday evening at Odd Fellows hall the Rebekahs and brothers shared a gala program despite snow. Welcome by Noble Grand B L Walker, songs, readings, and a banjo backed number drew cheers from Mesdames Foster Carter Cook Medler Oswell Atkinson and Frederick. Irene Stinchcomb Walker Brown Medler, plus Miss Atkinson and Carl Walker provided instrumental music. The crowd enjoyed an oyster supper and drills by each lodge ending in renewed fellowship and brotherhood.
Dressmakers and milliners must hasten work to prepare Easter gowns and hats on schedule. Easter 1912 falls on March 25, the earliest since 1818 when it arrived March 22. After 2000, Easter will not come so early again.
The present circuit court session runs seven weeks of jury work. Bert Hartwick v Alma Grain & Lumber Co was settled after jurors were drawn. Myteve Crippin case questions contract recovery for paid home purchases. Claw estate v Ann Arbor Railway to trial next Monday over a fatal motor car crossing collision. Case asks if a motor car is a locomotive. Next term opens January 27 with Goguin Matthews for plaintiff and Smith Toledo and Kress Dunham for defendants.
The Young Men's Bible Class of the MOK church elected officers. The slate includes President F O Parker Vice President Russell Putnam Secretary G S Crisp Treasurer Earl Holmes. Charles Graham of Ithaca was a visiting guest last Thursday.
Wash Geeselman, resident east of Crystal, is jailed on an assault with intent to kill charge after a line fence quarrel with neighbors Toss Traver and Jim Proctor. While repairing the fence, Geeselman allegedly fired from ten rods, narrowly missing Traver and Proctor as they scattered. Geeselman was arrested on a warrant.
Secretary of State Martindale announced that enrollment precincts must open January 2 to allow voters to enroll for the primaries. The law provides first Monday in April as enrollment day in even years, which will be 114. Enrollment officers must give notice in the usual manner.
James Klein, long known in Alma as a top dry goods salesman, leaves Simon Messinger after three and a half years and signs with D W Robinson at the Live Wire Stores. He began work last Thursday at the Superior Street store, and is a nephew of Leiter Bros in the dry goods trade.

Kison Hydorn of Alma died at 4:00 p.m. Monday January 6 after an illness of ofysipelas. He was born in Troy New York 1856 and lived in Wauseon Toledo Perris Centre Alma. He married Laura Wente October 3 1878. He was a carpenter, member of the Church of Christ and Modern Woodmen of America. Funeral held at church Wednesday at 1 p.m. Rev. A Mudge officiated with burial at Riverside cemetery.
Week of Prayer meetings run nightly this week except Saturday with themes Nations and their rulers Foreign Missions Families. Services start at 7 pm and end at 9 pm. Next Sunday morning the Lord's Supper will be observed. A Sabbath school teachers meeting occurs each Thursday evening for citywide workers. The six month prayer program centers on the Epistle to the Ephesians with nightly features. Attendance is rising.
The Republican state convention will be held in Lansing on February 11 to nominate candidates for Justice of the Supreme Court Superintendent of Public Instruction Regents of the University of Michigan State Highway Commissioner Member State Board of Life and Member State Board Agriculture.
A quiet Christmas Eve ceremony united Ella Miller and Ive Rowley at Park Avenue home of Mr and Mrs James Miller. The Alma High School graduate wore white merino with green piping. Rowley, a conductor with UL R, resides in town. They will set up housekeeping on Miller’s farm after building a new home.
Heverly McCarthy returned to ninth grade after months away while Rodney Burgess came back after weeks of sickness. Seniors plan a Vaudeville night for the annual fund. Basketball interest grows as classes prepare in the new building. Tuesday's class games saw the Juniors beat the Seniors 21 to 15 and the Sophomores topple the Freshmen 20 to 15, drawing a near capacity student crowd.
A A Ide living on C F Brown Farm near town died Saturday forenoon from strychnine poisoning. Coroner's verdict: death by own actions. Ide, 56, had been in poor health and mentally unbalanced, with neighbors noting morbid intentions. Funeral held Monday at North Star.
Gratiot town faces an oil craze as C A Zubler parcels land and plans drilling next spring. He attracted several Ohio investors with a $10,000 promoting fund and has leased about 3,000 acres, with more leases expected.

Professor George B Randall opened Alma College winter term with a talk on The Small College The Large College and The College in the University He argued that public confusion over college and university terms stems from historic usage He traced English and German influences and asserted that genuine college training aims to develop character leadership and service beyond mere living He cited university roles and noted that smaller colleges offer social and community advantages not found in larger schools The address was well received.

Alma friends learned that Mrs J W Holmes died at her daughter Mrs F G Engle’s home in Lansing after a bout of pleuro pneumonia. Obituary to follow next week.
