Narrow Escape As Auto Falls Into Race With Switch Engine
Two farmers J W Sprague and P Heat escaped serious harm after their southbound car was struck by a switch engine on Woodworth avenue, dragged about 25 feet into the railroad yard, and tipped into the water. They received minor injuries, were hospitalized briefly, then released after Dry clothes were provided. The wrecked auto was raised the following morning.

Alma men plan move to East Jordan furniture business
Robert G. Watcont and Verne Bam, long time Alma residents, will leave Monday for East Jordan to take possession of a furniture store and undertaking establishment they purchased there. Watcont came to Alma from Frankfort two years ago and worked at W weight furniture. Bam was Alma’s resident for years and once owned a ray line. They will leave Alma temporarily but may relocate in the spring. Archie Vanayne, son of Mrs. Wad Barnes, died Wednesday in Gaylord after a life spent in Alma, where he attended school and church activities. He leaves a wife and young daughter and his mother, with services conducted by Rev. Duffey and Rev. Gelston. Interment at Riverside cemetery.

Alma's second sale of army goods draws large crowd
Alma's officials held a Monday sale of army goods in the fire hall, opening near 0:00 a.m. A large crowd waited as 650 residents bought foodstuffs, bacon, pork and beans, tomatoes, and blankets. A few carried remaining bacon into Tuesday. officials said another sale would depend on public demand.

Louis Gretenberger, longtime Alma high school science instructor, has been named superintendent of Ithaca schools. R. G. Swigart of Alma succeeds him, bringing twelve years of teaching experience. Gretenberger moves to Ithaca with a salary increase of 400 dollars per year. Swigart is a well known Alma resident with seven years at Pleasant under Mr Kelder, expected to be a strong replacement mid year.

Pioneer Sandel Passes Away in Gratiot County
Jaco Sandel of Seville township Gratiot County born August 17 1868 Alsace Lorraine France died January 2 1920 at 76 years four months sixteen days pneumonia was listed as cause. He moved to America with parents at age four settling Lancaster New York married Magdalena Knoll in 1864 had six children Geo J Alma Anna M Chas and Carrie A two died in infancy. The Sandels lived in Lancaster until 1880 then moved to Gratiot County. He was baptized and confirmed in a German Lutheran church leaving a widow four children nine grandchildren and many friends.
