The Alma Public Schools mark the first anniversary of their banking system with deposits near seven hundred dollars from about 375 students. The program gives students hands on experience with bank books and clerical work, while teachers report no burdens from the system. Auto muffler carbon dioxide death shocks city
An AP dispatch from Chicago on January 6 reports Dr. John Aloysius Hempster a prominent physician died after carbon dioxide from a car engine muffler accumulated in the garage. He poured wood alcohol and kerosene to clean the exhaust, started the engine with the garage door closed and died the next day. He was fifty six.

House Burns In West Town Near Alma
A tenant house owned by Phar jat M. Woodard west of town burned to the ground about 8 o clock Sunday evening. Occupied by Arthur Harter and family with three children including a one day old infant. Fire started in the garret and spread quickly. The mother and babe escaped in bed clothing. Little was saved and none of the contents were insured. The house was only partially insured and Mrs. Harter is being cared for at the home of Wm. Beverly nearby.

A registered Percheron named Haussey, imported from Lafayette Indiana, was purchased by G B Hickok & Son and exhibited in Alma last Saturday. The three year old black stallion, registry 80223, heads a notable local draft horse display with dozens of horses shown in front of Hickok's barn and photographed for the Lafayette stock farm.

Nose crushed in sugar beet shed accident at St Louis factory
Thomas Turnbull brakeman on the P M R R was crushed when a heavy door swung open in a sugar beet shed at the St Louis factory Tuesday morning. He was hurled 20 feet and struck his face on the tracks, breaking his nose and sustaining cuts. Dr Barstow attended and he is doing as well as could be expected. The Arcadae Grange held a January 7 installation with Allen Mulchel as Master and other officers installed. Attendees from Ain and nearby joined a feast in the dinkage room for oysters and treats attended by ninety five women and children. A later December 31 session of Tiberty Grange No 39 noted use of hall for a one day institute on January 6, a guessing contest, and a talk by Brother Hubbard on grange work and road issues.
