Local Team Upsets Ithaca Highs in College Court

The Alma high school basketball team defeated Ithaca by 69 to 15 on the college court last Friday. Wood scored 26 baskets breaking the school record, while Fishbeck and others starred. The issue also notes debates, a forthcoming high school annual, and the 83rd Gratiot County Teachers Institute with lectures by H. R. Pattengill and Dr. A. E. Winship, opening Monday.

Gratiot County Farmers Institute Closes Meeting in Ithaca

The Farmers Institute met in the circuit court room at Ithaca on Jan 14 and 15. President Coleman opened with a concise program as J N McBride of Burton spoke on beans as a money crop and proper seed bed and fertilization. Dr Drake discussed poultry culture and Voorheis advocated Merino sheep, alfalfa, and fruit culture. The event featured arable topics, varied stock opinions, and a report on the Eastern Michigan Asylum farm. Officers elected for the next year: President A J Dickens Ithaca and Secretary J B Miller Ithaca.

Arcada Center Telephone Elects New Officers at Annual Meeting

The Arcada Center Telephone company held its yearly meeting this week and elected C. F. Hainline as President Guy Cook as Vice President Wallace Smith as Secretary and Treasurer. Stockholders praised cooperative telephones and recommended Union Telephone Co. for up-to-date service. Alma Record.

Automobiles Bring First Local Gasoline Delivery Wagon

The Alma Manufacturing Company unveiled the citys first gasoline powered delivery wagon built locally. It features a 24 horsepower air cooled engine, three speed transmission, direct drive, 1500 pound capacity, and solid tires. Designer O F Ruggles, formerly with Knox Atlas Morgan, pushed the project from December to its street debut, aiming to boost local industry and countywide benefits.

Farmers Club December Meeting At Hainline Home

The Farmers Club met at Mr. and Mrs. C F Hainline’s home with fifty guests. Delegates report by F Hainline pleased members. Officers elected: Pres U Fainline, Vice Pres Geo Irish, Rec Sec Mrs Grove Peck, Cor Sec Mrs Henry Puller, Treas Mrs John Fink. Next meeting to be hosted by Geo Irish on the last Thursday in January.

Wreck Blocks Owosso Junction Trains In Night Collision

A Thursday night wreck at Owosso Junction blocked the Ann Arbor Grand Trunk and Michigan Central lines after an Ann Arbor switch engine backed onto a Michigan Central freight on the Grand Trunk tracks. Front ends of both locomotives were derailed and blocked the crossing. Hugh Sergeant, ticket agent at the junction, escaped the incident through a weathered window as a crowd gathered. No injuries reported but the event disrupted service and drew attention to the open-air river skating scene. Mrs N Cummings and son Clarence were visiting Ithaca on Tuesday.

The college has secured Leland T Powers, famed American impersonator, for an evening program on Tuesday February 21. Citizens are urged to keep this date open for an exceptional literary and entertainment treat.

M Burkhardt Breaks Hip After Ice Fall

Civil war veteran M Burkhardt aged about seventy fell on the ice in front of his 508 College street home last Friday. Neighbors moved him indoors before he was taken to Brainerd hospital where the fracture was set. The accident is serious given his age, but he is progressing as well as could be expected.

Warning on Ice Cutting Safety and Legal Requirements

The Clair Sentinel notes rising ice formation and warns ice cutters to heed Act 221. It requires danger signals and barricades near cutting sites, three feet high, at least ten feet from openings, with penalties of up to three months in jail or a $100 fine for noncompliance.
