Friends of Jim Klein regret his departure from Alma to join Seiener Dry Goods of Canton Ohio as manager and buyer of domestic, carpet, trunk, lace curtain and drapery departments. He came to Alma in 1908, previously with Robinson Dry Goods and S Messenger as head salesman and buyer. A 2nd degree Mason and Shriner, he plans to leave on the 1th of this month with best wishes from Alma citizens.
The House rejected a constitutional amendment for national prohibition by 197 to 189 after a ten hour debate. Prohibitionists had shown ground, while a provision for state control under the powell amendment failed 179 to 32.
The Independent of St Louis resumes publication under new management after publisher R H Mudge died and the paper faded. F M Vandercock is now the publisher and the Record hopes for the paper to find success again.
All members of the Xmas Tree committees are urged to meet in the Wright Ficuse parlors on Friday January 8 at 8 oclock in the evening. Those interested in forming a permanent organization are invited to join the committees.
Two Alma merchants, W. L. Bennett and W. H. Miner, plus W. A. Miner, transferred their stores Monday evening. S. L. Bennett sold stock and leased his building, moving to 122 1 2 Superior with Victrolas and novelties. V. A. Miner and W. A. Miner formed new ventures in a confectionery and restaurant, leasing S. J. Bennett's building for five years. The men, long established in local business, now operate in new quarters and invite customers to inspect.
A large Bible class formed with 40 charter members at the Methodist Episcopal church of Pompeii. Organizers are H. L. Holmes of Alma and Dr. Skinner of Ithaca. First meeting New Year’s Eve with about eighty present. Officers: President Glen A. Woodbridge Vice-president Isane Sonver Secretary Ray Snyder Treasurer Jeane L. Walker Teacher JW Re Wray. A song service followed the election. The class aims to grow larger in the county.
Wesley Webb and Miss Mable Hunter were married at 1:30 on Wednesday December 29 at the home of the groom's parents Mr. and Mrs. Frank Webb. Only immediate relatives and friends attended the ceremony with Rev. Carl of Alma officiating.

Mr Claude P Satterlee of Wyandotte, Alma College graduate, marries Miss Flossie K Gates at the Gates home in St Louis New Year’s morning. Rev S B Ford conducts the ceremony with relatives present and a three course breakfast served. Out of town guests include Royal Mudge and Miss Dorothy Pennington among others.
Alma Red Cross volunteers respond to New York headquarters appeal with over 60 dollars worth of yarn sold and a shipment of 68 wristlets and socks 42 scarfs 15 mittens and 13 abdominal bands sent to New York. Twenty articles have already been completed in the second shipment.
Will St Seote of St Louis died yesterday afternoon at a Saginaw hospital after longstanding illness. He had undergone an operation there and his body was taken to Alma. The funeral will be held at his former home in St Louis Friday afternoon. He was connected with the grocery department of the Toger department store in St Louis for several years. He is survived by his wife and one daughter, Mrs. Lewis Hudson of Alma. Mrs. W A Tuttle returned Monday from a visit in Durand with her father.

Republic Motor Truck Company reports hard times fail to dampen growth as orders rise for new three ton trucks. To meet demand they will add the Miller Sur Trimmer Co building as a paint shop and convert main plant space for assembling, expanding output and payroll in Alma.
Farmers across the county benefited from wartime tariffs lowering imports. July 1913 saw 2,007 bushels of corn and 4,618 bushels of wheat imported under tariffs. July 1914, with corn free, 1,704,575 bushels arrived and 45,150 bushels of wheat. The shift gave farmers a domestic monopoly and raised prices.
Alma College basketball team returned from a five game stretch with mixed results. They defeated none of the stronger opponents but showed creditable effort against Lakeview, Lake City, Ladington, Traverse City, and Maniatique with scores of 45-19, 24-28, 22-21, 23-25, and 23-? respectively.
Gratiot county farmers plan strong participation at the grain and corn exhibition to be held January 14 and 15 at Michigan Agricultural College East Lansing in conjunction with the association’s annual meeting. About thirty five Gratiot members expect to attend and display improved grain from the past season.
The Art Club will meet on January 19 at the home of Mrs. F C Thorstargh located at 905 State Street.
