Alma plant produces 14 million pounds sugar in 1918 season

The Alma MI plant of the Michigan Sugar company closed a brief season producing 14,000,000 pounds of sugar from 60,101 tons of beets. Farmers received 280,000 dollars plus freight. Three months payroll reached 65,000 dollars supporting 250 workers. Rail freight cost 50,000 dollars. Materials used included 17,000 tons coal and 4,200 tons limerock. Nine other Michigan factories exist, signaling the state’s growing role in national sugar needs.

A Giving Christmas at Alma Presbyterian Sunday School

Alma Presbyterian Sunday school prepared a Christmas mission day with a $14.20 offering toward China Japan and India. Each class presented gifts and skits including fruit jelly bread and candy while a lighted display and a stereoptical Bible scene concluded the program.

Methodist Revival to Begin at Local Church

First Methodist Episcopal Church announces a series of revival meetings starting next Sunday with morning preaching on “The vast Christ” and evening services at 7 30 led by Rev. Thomas G R Brownlow. Four hundred seats available, with daily sermons through Friday including “The Victory of Life” and “Kings and Priests” among topics, plus choir music.

Fire damages residence on Superior Street

Fire in Robert McNabb’s residence at 315 West Superior Street started in the garret Tuesday afternoon. McNabb and Mrs. Nelson escaped as flames and smoke grew. three water streams fought the blaze for about 45 minutes. Home insured for 3900 and contents for 500. no injuries reported. George L. Ricketts of Warsaw visited Alma during the week.

Argada Farmer John Campbell Dies of Heart Trouble

Arcada township mourns John Campbell six days after Christmas death from heart trouble. He lived southwest of Alma and moved from Mason eighteen years ago. Survived by widow and three sons Lloyd of Alma Herbert at home and another in Mason. Remains shipped to Mason for burial. Service schedule includes Sunday worship 10:00 AM and 7:00 PM sermons, Sunday school 11:40 AM, week of prayer to begin Jan 5, and annual meeting Jan 7. A. R. Smith and H. M. Stoddard to attend third annual poultry show at Sheridan Jan 1.

Rhodes Scholarship Awarded to Tease Ydema of Holland

Ten candidates competed for the Cecil Rhodes scholarship with $4 400 for three years study at Oxford. Tease Ydema of Holland Mich a Hope College alum and UM graduate student won the prize after final testing in Ann Arbor presided by Judge Stewie and with UM officials present. Sidney Cook of Ann Arbor also competed and remains encouraged for a future 1915 bid while Ydema departs for England next summer.

Gratiot County Pioneer Peter Ostrang Reaches 106th Birthday

Old Gratiot resident Peter Ostrang celebrated his 106th birthday on Thursday. Born Christmas Day 1807 in Helvanis Kiselt, he moved to America at age 54 and has lived two miles northwest of Elwell for fifty-two years, with nine children among his long life in the region. He is in good health and hopes for several more years.

Death of Joseph Weeks Pioneer of Gratiot County

Joseph Weeks a Gratiot county pioneer died at his Pine River township home last Wednesday evening after months of illness He was born in New York January 1833 and came to Gratiot 38 years ago settling on his farm He leaves a widow and two sons George at home and Myron near Shepherd Funeral services were held at the home Saturday afternoon with burial in Wright cemetery.

Tragic Christmas Death From Gasoline Mistake at Alma

Miss Mattie Williams aged nineteen died after using gasoline mistaken for kerosene to start a fire on Christmas morning. The explosion set her room and stair area ablaze. Miss Mable Lake escaped by jumping from a window. Williams, daughter of Mr and Mrs George Williams, died at Brainerd hospital. Funeral held at her parents home conducted by Rev Thomas G R Brownlow and Mr Robert Von Thurn. Lake injured but recovering. House damage estimated at $200 due to fire department efforts.

Alma Post Office Sets December Mail Handling Record

The Alma post office reports December 1913 as the busiest month since inception. Over three days 2.8 sacks of mail, 7000 plus parcel post pieces, 11 000 one cent stamps, and extensive insured packages were processed without congestion. All 8060 parcels delivered by Christmas Eve, and staff under Assistant Postmaster Ezra Smith praised for efficiency.

Christmas program lights up Meth ostehiel with Santa Claus crowd

Needy of City remembers two Christmas trees and a green electric display at the Meth ostehiel Christmas Eve program. The primary department performed songs dialogues and recitations with strong title folk. Santa Claus sleigh bells plus his appearance drew crowd excitement as gifts were handed out to every scholar from the Sunday school.
