East Side Sunday School and Be ginners classes staged a Christmas program at the Presbyterian Church with a toy and fruit drive. Children dressed for missions delivered gifts and sang carols while a stereopticon displayed Christmas pictures. The missionary offering raised nearly fifteen dollars as Santa handed out prizes.
The Masonic Home on State Street prepares a Christmas dinner with pounds of candies nuts cranberries and plenty of other treats. Santa Claus has donated generously this year and parcel post packages have been many for residents. At four this afternoon the O F S and F A M No 44 plan a Christmas tree and musical program in the room formerly noted.
Superintendent Montague received five checks of 10 dollars each from Grand Rapids Masonic lodges to fund a memorable 1913 holiday season at the home. The aim is to enrich community cheer with a gymnasium event and festive plans underway.
The Park House changes hands as Dr. L. H. Harrison and Mrs Harrison join with L. C. Harding and H. H. Tess from Hutler Indiana to run the hotel and sanitarium. Harding oversees the business, Harrison heads the sanitarium work, Tess handles clerical duties, James Stafford remains as clerk, and most staff stay. Planned improvements include expanding the mineral springs and sanitarium operations.
The United Brethren Church holds services every first and third Sunday at 10:00 a.m. Everyone is invited. Pastor E. C. Clapp extends the cordial welcome.
Andrew Shaw of this city won three first prizes at Owosso's Shiawassee County Poultry Show held December 18 to 20. He claimed first for cockerel, first for pullet, plus third and fourth in pullet events and first for breeding pen, showcasing Buff Orpingtons.
Two Alma college students will join one hundred twenty five Michigan delegates representing the state at the quadrennial YMCA convention in Kansas City. The group will convene in Chicago on December 30 and travel by a special train with five sleepers and a club car under Burton B. Johnson of Lansing, Michigan YMCA. Emily Beach and Albert Esselstyn of Alma are named among the attendees.
Through courtesy of J. W. Robinson the Record office receives a copy of the Exeter Ontario Advocate for Dec. 18 with market items. Hay per ton four dollars, butter per pound one cent, eggs per dozen none listed, live hogs per hundredweight five cents, turkeys per pound seventeen to eighteen cents, and Toronto beans at two dollars twenty cents per bushel.
Chapman McNamara Matthews attorneys sue on behalf of former Farmers and Gleaners Elevator stockholders to recover about 2000 from directors for endorsed notes. suit alleges directors misrepresented business prospects. stockholders claim endorsements were based on false information. Also notes a news item about Mrs Tinker's illness and hospitalization in Portland Oregon.
In a regional anecdote, Alferd Potts is told by his father and grandfather that Santa Claus exists. The boy questions belief while the aged relative insists the child is old enough to know better, noting the grandparent’s long life.
The college played intramural games with Freshmen 15 Juniors 27 on Tuesday. Thursday Freshmen lost to Seniors 31 to 21. After a 9-19 halftime deficit the Freshmen outscored the Seniors 12-12 in the second half. Sophomore-Senior 26-13. Freshmen show promise. team and subs include Spinney captain Ed Johnson Stafford M Hyde French J Friedman Cresswell.
Tracy Schultheiss of St Louis visited Alma on Monday. J Barney has bought 221 percent acres of timber land 114 miles south of Alma, the C A Smith sugar bush, and operates a crew cutting it into wood.
Mrs Sylvia Gaffney and her son Russell left Detroit yesterday to visit her sister. She plans to go to Alameda California on Friday to spend New Year’s with her son John. They will stay six weeks, and on return she will buy springsteck in Chicago for the spring season.
An appreciative audience filled the opera house Wednesday night the 17th for the Killarney Girls in Irish costume. Rita Rich led seven gifted performers through a varied program of violin solos cello and piano works highlighting Irish folklore and heart throbs. The Lyceum committee secured an entertaining and spirited show praised for its wit legends and songs.
A factory employee at the Alma plant suffered a serious fall while oiling a boiler on Monday night. He tumbled about fifteen feet to the cement floor and was unconscious on rescue. Dr. Garnier treated him and he was taken home by auto. He sustained a deep head wound, a severely cut tongue, and internal side injuries. Mr and Mrs FF W Ruggles departed Saturday for a four week visit with relatives in Ware Massachusetts.
The Saint John’s Church Christmas Day service lists nine thirty a.m. Holy Communion with a Voluntary and processional pieces. It includes hymns Christians awake and It Came Upon the Midnight Clear, with Kyrie Gloria and Agnus Dei sections and offertory The Lord is my Light Alluson.
December auction listings announce HM Latidis offering eighteen cattle and farm implements at specified rural sites north of Klees school house and near Perris Center and Elin Mall, with James A. Smith and J D Forman selling personal property at public auction.

J B Tubbs and Son announce a sale of Holstein cattle on Thursday January 8 1914. The cattle are described as well marked and among the best in Michigan and are expected to attract a large crowd. The sale will also include farm implements and horses conducted by auctioneer J D Helman with P C Catlister as clerk.
J C Gossett formerly transferred from Michigan State Telephone Co local manager in Port Huron to the plant department has been reassigned to Alma as district manager beginning January 1. His family had not moved at the time but prepared to ship goods when the new post was announced. Mrs Gossett will resettle in the same house.
After February 2 the Grand Trunk depot at Owosso will be ready for use. trains will discontinue stopping at the old depot and at the Junction, and will stop only at the new depot. Five o'clock vesper service features a Christmas program with hymns, prayers, and organ pieces.
Miss Mable Brainerd and Wade Sherwood of Holly Michigan were married last Thursday at the Brainerd home. Rev. Mason officiated in a small family ceremony. After a five course dinner the couple left for an eastern tour. they will reside on a farm near Folly.
Garin school draws large crowd of parents and friends for a Christmas program across grades. In the high school auditorium the chorus, solos, and band performed including The End of a Perfect Day and The Gingerbread Man. Classes in ward and Union schools presented nativities, songs, recitations, and a Christmas play while teachers provided treats and a grand march ended the day.
On a rushed visit to Alma Santa Claus left a pair of twin girls at the home of Mr and Mrs Carl Pierson on Pine avenue. The incident is described as an exceptional Christmas gift with no further details provided.
