Gratiot County Alma loses Rev HL Crain as he resigns from the Presbyterian pastorate to accept a call in Frankfort Indiana. The church commemorates his three-year pastorate noting increased membership and property improvements while praising his leadership and preaching. A congregational meeting on February 26 will act on the resignation with plans to depart April first.
Yesterday marked Ash Wednesday opening Lent with schedules at St Johns church. Services include litany and penitential prayers, Holy Communion, daily morning and evening services, Holy Week prayers from Monday to Thursday, Good Friday three hours of remembrance, Fast Day Holy Communion, and a children’s service. Curtain notes indicate location at 275 W Superior Street.
Six large consignments of potatoes are due in New York over the next two days, boosting season receipts to about a million sacks with an import duty near $700000. Germany and France are buying heavily in Ireland and England, marking the first year America has gone abroad for potatoes since 1908. US yields about 75 bushels per acre vs 200 to 205 in England and Ireland.
The Alma city council, with quorum present, discusses paving Superior Street from Park Avenue to the race bridge and removing two hay scales. A notice to remove scales by April 1, 1013 is issued. The council also authorizes Water Board bids for State Street mains and an extension on Superior Street west to Grant Avenue.

PAD Etects Dere Alma's Popular Musical Organization In Flourishing Condition FRANK 0. PARKER, PRESIDENT at a hisiness meeting of the Alien Military Band. Monday evening, in the GA. Ro ball the following of ficers were elected for the ensuing year, Frank O. Parker, president, Rodney Burgess, vice-president Merbert J. Allen, secretary, W. Mereill Sunckey, treasurer, W. Ray Tomlin, manager. The boys have secured the services of A. J. Mulford as director for the past few weeks and it is hoped to make satisfactory arrangements to detain him for the coming season. Me Mulford came here well recom mended, he had several years ex perience as director and made band work a life study. The band was or ganized in Aimee, 1010, with prac tically all beginners and have a vanced very rapidly and are planning on giving weekly, open-air concerts during the coming season. 'The boys are much more efficient for the com ing year as they have had weekly re hearsals during the winter month. A concert was given it the Sirene skating rink last Thoreday eight in which the boys cleared about eight een dollars .They have several ine quities as to when they will or can go again. A movement is on foot at present to give Alma people an opportunity to hear some of Almas musical talent in the near future. A little co-operation on the part of the citizens and the band and the boys will gladly furnish music for their entertainment.

D L A Robinson is expanding with four carpenters at the rear to add a three-room dressmaking department. The new area will handle in-store alterations and outside work, under manager Minnie McCarty of St Louis. McCarty, a skilled dressmaker, will oversee operations starting by March to capture Alma and surrounding area demand.

The finances reported show a solid condition with endowment and stipends outlined. several committee proposals were reviewed but not acted upon. The meeting was described as very successful with various matters discussed.
Dosters announces the Rainbow Kinena Club at college chapel on Tuesday eve February 20. The two act performance by society members Nellie Van Tassel Beryl Rooderick Ruth Ashton Margaret Allen Mice Marion Marguerite ONeil Isabel Suita Jean McGill Beatrice Courtney Laura Brown Olive Mercer Jean basketball captain Maud Hooper Winifred Turner Hattie Mills Edith Jones Mary Clark Rose Jackson Carrie Rowland drew long applause. Carrie Rowland as the colored maid Rose Jackson earned special praise for her performance.
Alma must strengthen efforts to retain its minister as Crain, 3 years in town, has led the city church for most of that period. In that short tenure he has observed two M E church men, two Episcopal interim leaders, and one more interim.
The Baptist, United Brethren, and Christian churches host a social in the M E church parlors on March 1 from to 10 pm. The M E Aid Society invites ladies to bring their spouses and witty orders of committees for a welcoming event honoring new members and strangers who have joined recently.
Bishop Williams presided at the confirmation service at St Johns parish with a large turnout. Present were clergy and vestry members plus new confirmands Catherine Wilkinson Enaly Tanne Att 6, Ger Megs Ralph Wheaton Jay Mike and Keatteth 4X. The bishop preached on living for the end of life and the worldly view of God, then met parish officers in the rectory before an early departure due to a death in Detroit.
Former Alma public schools English teacher Edith Lennox married George Morrison, a Coldwater native and civil engineer, last Friday in San Antonio. The couple, who met during school days, will reside in Mexico City. Also, the Women's Foreign Missionary Society hosts a Washington supper at the Methodist church Friday February 93 from five until served. 25 cent supper.
The fourth annual banquet was held Friday February 16 at the M E Church parlor. Knights of the New Century, a Bible class group, heard toasts by Stuckey, Parker, Holmes, Smith, Kennedy, Fishbeck, Bergy, and others. Guests included Mr and Mrs Smith and Mrs Stuckey. decor featured green and white, with green punch and white carnations.
