A public reception at Wright Hall honored new college president and Mrs. Crooks. Faculty hosted with Medlar's orchestra providing music and refreshments served. The high school team’s victory boosted morale among students and townspeople alike.
Knights of Pythias Lodge No. 25 hosted a festive event for the Pythian Sister Lodge celebrating their 21st anniversary. The program featured vocal and instrumental music, readings, and a guessing contest followed by a banquet and dancing with Myrtle and pink carnation decor. About thirty couples attended and reported a pleasant evening. Also noted: potential close of Consolidated Light and Power Co. sale. Detroit property sale set for March 28 and hearing of claims February 11.
The Rev J M Barkley longtime pastor of the Porest Avenue Presbyterian Church announces his resignation at age 70. A Civil War veteran he has served as a college trustee and acted as president after Dr Bieienfell’s resignation until Dr Crooks took the post. He plans to stay active in church work. Meanwhile Barnes of Alma Garden Shop has mailed catalogs of garden furniture and received a large order from New Jersey after printing by the Record office.
The Arcads Farmer's Club invites farmers and wives to a full day at Weese hall on Thursday February 24 with a program of speaking exhibitions and music. Free stall room via Roller Mills at Shiek's barn for teams. George Bildson invites a tour of the mill and Manager Griffin presents grain exhibits. Local women and guests welcome.
Last Monday evening the Gratiot County Local Option club met at Ithaca to plan literature distribution for countywide local option calls. A Quaker was elected from each town. officers named include UC Moore of Alma as president, Smith of Ithaca as vice-president, Thomas Harrod of Ithaca as secretary, and Prank Convis of Rhden as treasurer.
The Record apologizes for a typographical error that overstated Perrige's car sales forecast, correcting it to one hundred possible cars. Also published is the tax notice stating taxes are due by February 29 and paid at Rhodes Drug Store or City Hall on February 26 28 and 20th with return day March 1.
Marshall Allen of Alma married Mie Martha Mackabee of Ohio in Ironton at Christ Episcopal Church last Sunday week. Ceremony by Rev. W. Hampton witnessed by immediate family and a few friends. The couple will reside in Alma at 2 Maple Avenue after a wedding breakfast at Mrs. McGuffin’s home in Paris, France.
Local basketball squads continued a strong run in the intercollegiate series. Marion beat Hillsdale 46 to 6 as Pullen led visiting scoring while Roberts and Spinney shone in defense and foul shooting. Hope College from Holland impressed with Vin Veenker and Patten contributing long shots in a close 14 to 12 first half, but Marion pulled ahead in the second half. Sheriff Bradford captured Richard Brewer in Morrill for allegedly attempting to dodge a 3 12 beard bill, after Brewer vanished from the Gallick restaurant last fall.
The largest Alma High preliminary oratorical contest featured fifteen contestants over two days. Seven finalists were chosen: Hazel Shankel, Pauline Horton, Helen Mason, Fern Coleman, Floyd Helman, Howard Handley, and Willard Beshgetoor. Judges were Mise Bittner, Mr. Luchtman, and Mr. Crisp.
The meeting reviewed a withdrawal card for Companion Frank Neving now in Marion and endorsed printing 100 cards for dues notices. Companions were urged to place the cards for quick reference. A Lincoln Day banquet program from Grand Rapids featured John M. Dunham, Alma native, as welcome speaker, with cellists and readings listed.
Owing to the illness of Miss Gay Venda McLaren the entertainer scheduled to appear in this city Wednesday evening, it has been necessary to postpone her engagement till some time in April. The next number will be given in March.
Public auction will sell on the T. A. Ely farm two and a half miles south of Alma Monday at noon. Farm stock and tools will be offered. Free lunch at noon. A. L. Chamberlain of Port Huron has advised he can address the Father and Son banquet of the M. B. A. to be held in this city next week.
The Wright House was the scene of a lavish Phi Phi Alpha banquet honoring Abraham Lincoln. Red and black decor, lights, and white linens underscored the elegant event with music, toasts, and a refined menu. The article also notes the death of George W. Faunce, detailing his family and illness.
A postal card box social is planned at Beebe School House Emerton No 3 Friday evening February 26. Everyone is invited with women and girls urged to bring chores and men and boys to bring money. Hot coffee will be served at a cent a cup. Laura M Gossett teaches.
The newly enacted law requires township caucuses to occur no later than March 13 and ballots to be printed at least 12 days before the election. Registration timing remains unchanged. Caucuses must start earlier this year with a hard deadline of March 14 2016, and notices may be published free by The Record.
Beginning February 7 the post office tallied nails delivered by three carriers and a substitute, totaling 24 519 pieces weighing 4 in pounds. The effort aims to prove the urgent need for adding a carrier to avoid service disruption experienced in the past.
J R McCarty of 210 Prospect avenue Detroit returned Thursday from a business trip with an ugly head wound and about 75 dollars missing after a beating by a thug with an iron instrument. He was employed by the Republic Motor Truck Company and says two thugs attacked him near a relative’s home while he walked home. The attacker’s weapon and the exact time are unclear. He was treated at the Emergency Hospital. his money and a company check were taken, with the check later stopped for payment. Police were notified as a threat from Detroit criminals is noted.
The Rt Rev Charles D Williams Bishop of Michigan will visit St John’s parish this Sunday at 5 pm for vesper services. It marks his second Episcopal visit and coincides with the tenth anniversary of his consecration observed on February 7.
The Department of Agriculture at Contest State Normal Mt Pleasant reports steady growth in plant distributions. About Arbor Day parcel post trees cost two cents each. over five hundred walnut trees and twenty five thousand total trees have been sent to schools and farms. Concord grape plants also distributed to show cheap, reliable stock. Checks money orders or stamps accepted for payment.
A blaze in Midland Tuesday night raged through a business district, causing about 60 000 in damage. William Baker, president of Peoples Savings Bank, died attempting to rescue a woman. Miss Taylor, a millinery store worker, perished next to the building. Explosions followed entry, walls collapsed, and victims were recovered by noon. An investigation is to be conducted, but the exact cause remains uncertain.
