Lincoln Memorial meeting at Alma selects officers

The Gratiot County Lincoln Memorial association held its annual meeting at the Colonial theatre in St. Louis. H J Winchell was elected president, John Greig secretary treasurer from Alma, and Alma chosen as next meeting site. Speakers Professor J Mitchell of Alma College and Mr Miller of Elwell reviewed Lincoln's intellect and policies, praising his constitutional leadership and lasting influence. Dr Hallenback of St Louis tied Lincoln’s enduring spirit to progress and peace.

Delavan Toastmaster Class Banquet Honors Growth of Sunday School

Sixteen Methodist Episcopal Sunday school members gathered at Merrill Stuckey’s home on Grant Avenue for an annual class banquet. Led by Mrs. Ezra L. Smith, the group heard toasts and speeches praising the class’s rise from five to eighteen members. The event included a four course menu and fellowship, with remarks on patriotism, personal achievements, and the link between church and Sunday school.

Phi Phi Alpha Banquet Toasts Lincoln Theme at Church Parlor

The Phi Phi Alpha Literary Society of the college held its annual banner banquet Friday night in the Presbyterian church parlors. Louis E. Anderson served as toastmaster while members and guests toasted Lincoln with varied remarks. Attendees included Ralph Yonker, Frank Locker, Joy Pettitt, and other society and alumni representatives. The event featured a Japanesedesign place card display and a Lincoln centric program, ending as a high success.

Alma Girls and Owosso Boys Win at College Gymnasium

High school basketball doubleheader produced Alma girls 22 to 14 over Lakeview and Alma boys 43 to a tone over Owosso. Mabel Wyant led Alma girls with Georgia Call for Lakeview, first half tied 10 to 10. Jess starred for Alma boys. Owosso failed to keep pace as Alma pulled away in second half.

Mrs Gaffney to open new millinery shop in central Michigan

Mrs Sylvia Gaffney owner of the Superior street millinery closes stock at her current shop to fund a move to the Brewbaker block on State Street. A removal sale begins the latter part of the week with carpenters plasterers and decorators preparing the former vaudeville space into a new millinery shop expected to rival any in central Michigan.

Boomerang Prank Triggers Alma Street Scare

A local Alma man staged a grotesque prank on his wife by simulating fatal injuries with red paint and stage violence at home. The ruse caused terror across the downtown area as neighbors and bystanders rushed to aid, ending with a warning about the dangers of practical jokes.

On Friday evening February 1 a pleasant surprise gathered about 75 friends in Sumner township for Mr and Mrs James McNamara who sold their farm and plan to move near Mt Pleasant Isabella county. Alma College trustees hold February session in administration building

Alma College board of trustees met in room 18 of the administration building for the semi annual session. James R. Wylie was elected president and other officers named. Tuition and incidentals for college and academy were adjusted, with detailed changes for each department. Several routine financial matters were acted on and trustees listed with their cities.

Fine Prospects in Athletics at College

After classification, second semester attendance at the college is strong, with about 250 students enrolled. Many short course students remain for regular college work, boosting track and baseball prospects. Old stars like McComb return for track, with new athletes including Chatel, Cook, and Gage aiming for varsity status. The baseball lineup includes Whitlock, Javeos, Brilmyer, Burke, and others. schedule lists games against Kalamazoo, Michigan, Adrian, Albion, Hillsdale, Olivet, and a Kalamazoo intercollegiate meet in Kalamazoo.

Postal Card Shower for Rural Carrier Chet Walker

Chet Walker, rural mail carrier on Route FP D No 4 out of Alma, won a postal card shower last Monday. Sixty two cards were received that day with others arriving belatedly on Tuesday and Wednesday. He has quickly become popular with route patrons.
