Thirty members of the local Knights of Pythias left on the evening train to Sag inaw for a big initiation. Twenty nine candidates were tested in the first degree at the May City Judge’s big Auditorium with five from Albi and others from across the district. Officers from Cran Lodge led the initiation followed by a Wig Wager. The gathering included Grand Lodge officers and several members from nearby lodges.

J. W. Holmes, city tax collector, says collections are fairly easy and he is encountering few difficulties this year. He will be at city hall on Wednesdays and Fridays only. In the first week he collected 44000 of the 41000 on his list, signaling prosperity among Alma's taxpayers.
W. Wo Stoppply of the Little Gio Hay Drees company returned last Friday after a four week tour of the banks and markets. He noted rapid business growth, seven staff in the office, and the company contributing heavily to the local post office by handling vast outgoing mail. O. W. Hayes of Flint will join as bookkeeper and assistant sales manager next Monday.
Mrs Mary Fatty died at her Pine River home last Saturday between 12 and 1 pm. Funeral services were at the house conducted by Rev WE Doty of the Methodist church. Burial at Riverside Cemetery. Born in Germany about 82 years ago she came to this country at 19, first living near Cleveland then Gratiot county. Married to Andrew Fatty at twenty, eight children born, six living: Peter and John Fatty of Alma, Conda of Six Lakes, Sisan of Whittemore, Josephine and Elizabeth remaining at the old home.
The Cycle and Auto Trade Journal features a Cameron car driven by Mr. F F Cameron. It placed second in the under $850 class and first in the $850 to $1950 stock car class at the December Fort Lee hill climb. The magazine’s cut shows the car and driver as the hill crest is reached.
The Junior class staged their annual approach to the Seniors Friday evening in the dining rooms at Weighthall. Juniors performed various stunts for the seniors amusement, including singing and recitations. Child games entertained, refreshments served, and the seniors praised the Juniors for their hospitality.
Local high school basketball saw Alita Wigh School edge Mt Pleasant 25 to 8 in a crowded Mt Pleasant court. Star players Ward and Suiart led the efforts as the team controlled the middle and delivered a strong defensive performance.
A four year old boy, Henry Bronte, son of Mr. and Mrs. John Bronte, burned to death in his father's barn near Elm Hall while playing with matches. The barn burned quickly, the building collapsed before help could reach him, and only the trunk remained. The remains were interred the next day. A sister reportedly died in the same building years earlier. The family lost a horse and stored hay oats corn clover seed and tools. insurance was carried.
Prof J Q Adams of Alma College outlines a chartered special train from Alma to Lansing on March 4 for the state oratorical contest with two Alma representatives. Return after programs, same night. Round trip fare 1.90. Community urged to attend to boost Alma's chances to win the state honors.
Theodore Higbee of Marquette began duties at the Wright House late last week. He has hotel experience including a prior stint with Hotel Whiting in Traverse City and is familiar with local patrons from earlier employment.
Gratiot county residents from Pine River to Alma applied for census work with varied backgrounds including gray haired men, young college students, and married women. Papers are graded by S Perry Young in Stanton and sent to Washington. final appointments depend on Civil Service. work begins April 15 with about twenty five enumerators in the county and two in Alma.
Friday night in the college gym two games feature Owosso high boys vs Riverdale girls. The Riverdale girls meet the local girls while the Owosso boys close the program’s final appearance. Fans urged to turn out and cheer the locals.
Mire Alva T Vought daughter of Mr and Mrs Dowitt Vought of the village line drawn warded honor at the annual concours by students of the State North school. The event featured the presentation of work by Miss Vought and other students under teacher supervision. The display included a project on radiation and a list of yearly achievements, with emphasis on careful study and industry.
A crowded Monday roster covered church concerts by the Southland Nightingales at the Methodist church, a Christian Endeavor talk by Wm. R. Hall at the Presbyterian church, temperance address at the Baptist church, a Christian Science lecture at the opera house, plus a Woodmen hall dance. College literary meetings, a sleigh ride party for Roy Phillips and bride, Odd Fellows gathering, vaudeville, and a Free Reading Room all filled the town with activity.
