George Masters, long-time saw mill operator, said 1965 was his best year amid timber depletion concerns in the Lake Alpe region. He reported manufacturing 21,000,000 shingles and 10,000 cedar railway ties at Kin mill during the past year.
The Phi Phi Alpha literary society held its annual Lincoln Day banquet in the Sanitar ium with 36 covers. Toastmaster J Norman King introduced talks by M L Marshall and Elizabeth Hant, plus others, concluding with an impromptu toast to the society and a cheerful adjournment. After a week of illness pneumonia caused the death of Mrs. HL C Button at age 60 in Gratiot. Born Arenzy in 1837 in Lyona New York she moved to Michigan at age two with her parents and lived in Walled Lake. She married H C Batton in Highland at 18 and later moved to Gratiot, raised six children two of whom predeceased her. She was an active Methodist and faithful wife and mother. Funeral Saturday at 10 in the Methodist church with Rev BE Hoag officiating. burial at Riverside Cemetery.
B Ww Gaoul visited Saginaw and recovered at home after weeks in the Sanitarium. Residents and guests attended a Thursday evening aboard and dancing hosted by C F Brown at the Sanitarium. New arrivals include Fred F. McOmber Ann Arbor and T F West Grand Rapids. Alma locals report rising business at the bathhouse and skilled attendants, with baths priced at 25 cents and mineral with massage at 1 dollar.
Banking Commissioner Moore reports a strong year for Michigan state banks with 25 new banks and one trust company, totaling 280 state banks, five trust companies, and one savings society under state supervision. Capital investments rose as ten banks added 407,600 and new banks lifted total state banking capital by 1,222,500. two banks liquidated and none failed.
Miss Bertha Downs hosted Alma high school juniors and seniors on Wednesday for an original program. About twenty Christian Endeavor members attended Olive Smiths Valentine party with cards and games. A large Valentine social by the LL OTM MOM in the K of P held Friday drew over two hundred attendees.
Prof Cook outlined past city spending on sewerage and water mains while stressing urgent fire protection upgrades. He cited wooden mains aged over twenty years and called for iron replacements, extended water pipes, and a bonded fund for cemetery water and hospital protection against epidemics.
The Alma College Association of the Northwest held its annual meeting and banquet at the Victoria Hotel in Chicago on February 12. Alumni from Michigan, Indiana, and Illinois renewed bonds, with Rev. G. L. Divine presiding as toastmaster Ira M. Hazel introduced toasts by Mrs. Mary Cook Strong and others. The group voted special greeting to A. W. Wright for generosity to Alma College. The W R B Thimble circle plans an all day meeting with Mrs. Mary Alle next Tuesday.
