Racing Matinee At Pine River Draws West Michigan Crowd

A large audience enjoyed the matinee on Pine River Monday with plans to hold weekly shows, weather permitting. The Free for All Pace featured Anna K Eckert, and Hyde Class A and B races included Jonnivan Little Jude Marjory Chimes and others. Three Native American girls ran away from Mt Pleasant Indian School and were recovered by local officers for Garland Nevitt. Holsinger to open a new grocery and boarding house in Alma February 1 near Plant Three of the Republic.

Closed Movies In Alma Through Fuel Shortage Sundays Suspended

Mayor Ira H. McKinney announced Alma movie houses would close on Sundays for the duration of the fuel crisis. He said the ban depends entirely on the fuel situation and will be lifted when conditions improve. Movie houses may resume Sunday showings soon.

Died Sunday Mire Race Noted Local Resident

Mire Race a well known resident of this city died at the hospital following a serious operation. Born February 21 1871 in Tone county she married L W Race in 1887 and survived by her husband and one son Ural Race of Fresno California. Funeral services were held at the old family home with interment in Orleans cemetery. She had been a member of the M E church and involved in local societies.

Draft Board Calls 280 Men for Examinations

Gratiot county draft board has summoned 280 men for physical exams next Monday and Tuesday. These are the men previously called for examination whose status had not yet been settled after the initial call. New papers were issued due to updated qualification rules, and examinations will resume.
