A transport carrying 2,179 Michigan and Wisconsin Guardsmen was sunk in a military incident. In other news, sixty nine older boys from county attended a Y M C A meet in the city.
The Third Annual Older Boys Conference of Gratiot county opened with a banquet at the M. E. church in Alma. Delegates heard talks urging farm work, production, and sacrifice. An Alma High School orchestra provided music followed by sessions at Alma College chapel and a basketball game. Resolutions urged production, sacrifice, and living usefully, with officers elected for next year.
Gordia Smith aged 85 one of Pine River township’s best known residents died at his daughter’s home in St Johns last week. A Gratiot county board of supervisors veteran he served twenty straight years and declined another candidacy. Born September 7 1832 in New York he moved to Michigan at twenty and later settled in Gratiot County on a farm in Pine River township. His body returned to Michigan for funeral and interment in St Louis cemetery.
Dr. Carney of this city will open a private hospital by March 1 at the W. H. Shepard home on Woodworth avenue near Miller Bros. grocery. Remodeling, an operating room with modern devises, moving fixtures from College Avenue, and hiring a matron and nurses are planned. Offices will move from Merchants' Building to the Shepard home to serve patients better. The Shepards expect to move into their new residence within two weeks as work begins.
Police chief Wibber reports six arrests for the month mostly for intoxication with five fined or jailed briefly. A sixth offender, a U S Army slacker, was located and sent to Camp Custer. Community singing at Presbyterian church Sunday at 3 30 p m led by Mix Notestein will speak, with Bliss in charge. Enridge First View lists officers Robert Green J Louie Keith Toker Over Mack Charlee Shimmons.
Judge E J Moinet delayed opening until March fourth after defense motion for continuance seeks witnesses in Florida Ohio Illinois. Prosecution led by Ora L Smith argued for immediate trial noting alleged witness bribery. Change of venue likely if pursued with Eichorn case leading the docket while Inez Johnson case and others await actions.
Ed Lathrop prominent Gratiot county citizen and Elwell businessman died at his home at 1:00 Sunday fore noon aged 68. Born May 2 1841 in Oxford Michigan he worked in farming lumbering and commerce and served as postmaster. Survived by wife Martie Slingluff daughter Nettie and granddaughter Doris. Funeral services were held Tuesday at 1 PM at his home conducted by Rev Frank Jackson Alma Michigan. City notice warns water rent statements and payment due by February date. post deadline and discontinuation of service if unpaid.
Medler and Hanley, operating as Medler & Hanley, will open an electrical repair shop in the basement of the I. O. O. F. block under Western Union offices. The two partners bring years of local electrical experience and will handle repairs, contracts, and a full line of fixtures and electrical goods. More stock has arrived and others are expected in the coming days as the firm plans to expand local business.
Alma College will hold a celebratory program Tuesday February 12 to honor enlisted students and unfurl the college service flag for the first time. Former Michigan Governor Chase S. Osborn will deliver the address on an as yet unnamed Lincoln Day topic. The college notes enlistments near a hundred as patriotic service grows, with about half the prewar student body now serving. Exercises begin at 10:10 a.m. and the public is invited.
Olivet College basketball aims for a second win of the season facing Alma High under Coach Harry Helmer. Alma hosts the undefeated Olivet at Alma in a key M I A contest, hoping to rebound from a rough showing against Hillsdale and regain form.
Edwin N Chadwick longtime Alma resident and former Justice of the Peace died at his Woodworth home after a long illness. He served six years as justice from 1905 to 1910, was a Civil War veteran, former commander of the local G A R post, and a member of the IOOF lodge. An obituary will follow next week.
At a January 24 faculty meeting the decision was made to abolish spring vacation to end recess from Christmas to June. The aim is to have students begin work sooner to help feed armies in France. Circulation counts are noted.
British warships convoyed a vessel and saved about 1900 men, according to the report. Completion of a paint plant is near, with interior work accelerating as heat is on and two weeks likely to finish the building.
Recouiting Officer Tom Bostone says enlistments again boom after a dip last month, with nine new enlistments by Tuesday night. Names include Beddow of Mt. Pleasant, Sullivan of Rosebush, Nevilles and Bailey of Alma, Hicks and Hopkins of Alma College, Bey, Hersch, Vumas, and others. Alma ranks fifth in the state for December and January with several sub-stations listed and Battle Creek and Cadillac trading positions.
Alma coal dealers report receiving only half to a third of expected coal loads. One shipment meant for a forty ton yearload arrived at twenty tons, and another consignment of fifty odd tons left less than one third. The scarcity era forces dealers to stretch limited coal, underscoring the public hardship amid rising demand.
A Cunard liner, the Tuscania, was torpedoed and sunk off the Irish coast while carrying about 2179 United States soldiers to Europe. Among the missing are Wisconsin and Michigan National Guard units. several saved due to British escort ships. The War Department lists units aboard, including D E F of the 20th Engineers and Wisconsin and Michigan National Guard elements, with aero squadron detachments. Washington notes uncertain casualty numbers but hopes for quick updates.
