Alma Gas Franchise Tension Foreshadows Rate Battle

City officials may revoke the Alma Gratiot County Gas Co franchise within weeks and join with the company to appeal to the Public Utilities Commission for a seven percent fixed rate. Several Deaths From Influenza Reported in City

Influenza outbreaks claim multiple lives. Mrs Flossie Corothers aged 182 died in Alma after visiting Kalamazoo and Marlette. Emiline Griffith, 75, died in Lansing and funeral in Emerson township. Henry King, 25, former Alma resident, died in Lansing and was buried in Riverside cemetery after a Sunday funeral.

Reverend Matt Duffy Voices Alma's Needs and Hope

Rev Matt W Duffy pastor of First Methodist Episcopal Church urged Alma residents to confront youth issues in a strong evening address. He warned against movies and pool rooms, urged a Sabbath-respecting city, better depots, parks, a city hospital, a daily paper, and cooperative civic action to make Alma an example for others.

Debating League Sets Strike Arbitration Question

The Triangular Debating league comprising Hope, Kalamazoo and Alma colleges will debate the strike arbitration question on April 16. The topic: Resolved that there should be a Federal Board to control compulsory arbitration in strikes. Kalamazoo joins the league replacing Oliver College, which closed last June. A February 9 note reports Rev Leon May declaring spring is coming after sighting a robin.

Alma to Form High Grade Band Under Masonic Auspices

Officers have been elected for a new city band organized under the Masonic lodge. Director F. J. Tucker and TL. Nickerson lead a roster of local players with regular practices planned. The band aims to revitalize Alma’s musical scene, filling a long felt need since the Republic band disbanded two years ago.

Farmers Institute to Held in Gratiot County Armory

A two day farmers institute is set for February 11 and February 20 at the Tthacs village armory. The program covers community betterment soils farm production costs and the farmer in reconstruction with talks by G W Kennedy John Ketchum and others plus music readings and a question box.

Greenville Wins Fast High School Basketball Tilt 46 to 27

The Greenville high school quintet defeated Alma 46 to 27 in a fast contest led by Sherwood and Ranney. Caldwell credits Sherwood’s long range shooting, while Alma’s Creech and Creech’s seven field baskets kept the game competitive. Also noted are local activities and a clerical examination date.

Fires At Carney Hospital Residence In Alma Destroyed

Two fires broke out Saturday afternoon in Alma. The second alarm sent Carney Fire Department to Dr. Thomas J. Carney’s Woolworth avenue home chosen as a hospital a week earlier. The blaze started in the basement and climbed to the attic. water streams fought the stubborn flames for nearly an hour. Estimated damage near 3000 dollars. Earlier a small fire at Fred Amehury’s western city home was extinguished before arrival with very light loss.

Legion to Form Woman's Auxiliary

A movement among officers of the George W. Myers post No 182 American Legion aims to form a women’s auxiliary to work with the post. Eligible are wives mothers daughters and sisters of Legion members and Allied members. Alma backs national essay contest with local prizes

Alma public schools join a national essay contest to be held February 20. Local merchants and the Alma state savings bank offer prizes for student essays on the army. American Legion Post 142 of Alma overwhelmed undefeated Edmore 59 to 29 as Wool and Crittenden stifled the visitors with a two basket defense. M Smith led with fourteen field goals and 29 points total, while D Smith Beattie and L Clear supplied the rest in a standout Alma College court win. Also, Benjamin Chard and Delia Duke were arrested at the Alma Hotel for a marriage in haste and await sentencing in Ithaca.
