Alma citizens rally behind the Red Cross fund as ward committees report strong cooperation. Fifty acres worth of yarn distributed last week among Alma ladies with crochet guides and supplies. a second yarn order to follow. Mr. D. W. Robinson offers wholesale yarn, a $50 fund deposited, and moving picture show host Mr. Weis to stage three benefit performances of The Uphill Climb next Friday. Proceeds support war sufferers and local volunteers.

West Indies plantation plans by William Bahlke
William Bahlke leaves Tuesday for Isle of Pines sixty miles south of Cuba to begin improvements on a new one hundred acre plantation. He will build a winter home if conditions are favorable and raise citrus fruit including grapefruit. The island is touted as ideal for Michigan settlers with a near perfect climate and no contagious disease in its history. Clarence Wheeler farm has been equipped with gas by Gratiot Co Gas Co including gas stoves lights and chandeliers.

Addison Wilson Recovering From Appendicitis At Brainerd
Addison Wilson, a college student and pastor of Lafayette and Emerson churches, underwent an appendectomy at Brainerd Hospital Tuesday afternoon and is recovering well. He will likely stay about a week longer, and with his recovery his college track prospects dim as he must relinquish athletics for the remainder of his college career. Wilson captained the college track team, specialized in the two mile, and was among the state’s best, the only varsity letter winner in track for three years. His absence weakens Alma’s chance to win the MIAA track championship next June.

Miss Frances Sit Frances Smith of Alma Dies After Illness
Frances Smith born in Canada on April 2 1871 moved to Alma Michigan at age eleven. She cared for her invalid mother, visited Canada recently, returned Nov 2, contracted scarlet fever and died Friday night. Funeral at home with Rev JW Priest. Survived by five brothers. remembered for charity and strong Baptist faith.

Burial of Frank E. Smith Follows Missouri Death
The body of Frank E. Smith eldest son of Mr and Mrs Phillip was brought from Missouri for burial in Alma last Thursday night. Funeral services were held Friday at 10 30 AM at their West Center Street home conducted by Rev Frank Jackson. Smith had gone to Missouri three years earlier leaving his wife and two children in Ashley. He later fell ill with typhoid fever and, after revealing his family’s location to his doctor, underwent appendicitis surgery at St Francis Hospital Cape Girardeau Missouri and died the day after. Remains shipped to Alma with floral tributes from friends and neighbors.
