Books for Library Citizens form Alma reading room appeal

The Civic league of Alma appoints Mrs Ely Brewbaker and Mrs E T Lamb to solicit small contributions from locals to buy new books for the Alma Free Reading room on Woodworth Avenue. The Reading room welcomes men and boys from Alma and nearby towns, with hours Saturday and Sunday 2 to 6, weekdays 4 to 6, and every evening 7 to 10.

Ard E Richardson Elected Mayor of Saginaw in New Form

Ard E Richardson, brother of Howard C Richardson formerly of Alma, won the Saginaw mayoral race by about 1600 votes and carried 16 of 20 wards. Saginaw adopts commission government and Richardson becomes first mayor under the system, duties to begin January 1.

State Y M C A Boys Meet In Saginaw With 1000 Attendees

About 1000 to 1200 Michigan State Y M C A boys attended a Saginaw conference starting Friday with a city banquet, readings, and a parade led by Alpena Boys Band. Notable speakers included Cartwright MA C coach, Robinson New York, and Upton from Panne Rapids. The 1914 conference will be held in Ann Arbor.

Auto Insurance Rates Decreased Across United States

Automobile insurance rates were reduced by fifteen percent across the eastern conference of insurance companies, affecting about 1.8 million cars nationwide. The cut is said to apply to vehicles equipped with proper protective gear, impacting nearly every fire insurance company in the United States.

Alma Crist WEDS Archie A Rogers At Home Wedding

Alma Crist and Archie A Rogers were married at five o clock Thanksgiving afternoon at the Crist home west of Alma. Rev. T. G. R. Brownlow presided with Mildred Wiley at the piano. Attendants were Hazel Rogers and Roy Crist. A pink and white decor theme carried through the parlor and dining room. The reception followed for forty eight guests. The couple will reside on the farm south of the bride’s parents.

Wright House Welcomes New Manager J Fuller

J Fuller formerly of the Winter Inn at Greenville arrived with his wife and two sons in Alma and took over the Wright House after dinner hour. He and his wife have hotel experience including leadership of the Phoenix at Edmore in 1910 and the Winter Inn at Greenville. Fuller plans improvements and has bought rugs for halls and parlors. Rev. J Frank Jackson preached Advent sermon in St Johns church yesterday.

Obituary of John Davidson Dies at Forest Hill

John Davidson, born December 22, 1841 in Co choeton County Ohio, died November 19 1913 at Forest Hill aged 72 after four Civil War years of service. Funeral at home followed by Oak Grove cemetery burial. Survived by wife Mary S and eleven children including George W William Joshua Alonzo Franklin Hittee Chapman Richard Emma Owen Alma Florella Swartz Mia Phebe Smith Florence Brown and many friends.

Popular lecture on the unborn child in Gratiot County

The Gratiot County Medical Society and University Extension Course present a popular adults lecture in the High school auditorium on Thursday evening December 11, 2014. De Reuben Peterson of the University Medical School Ann Arbor will discuss The Rights of the Unborn Child. Professor Peterson is a noted state lecturer. The Oddfellows of Gratiot county plan a large December 11 gathering in Ithaca led by Grand Master HH A Thompson of Williamston to confer past official and Grand Lodge degrees. Beet Price Contract Highlights 1914 Sugar Beet Plan

The Alma sugar plant and Michigan beet growers settle a 1914 flat rate of 5.60 dollars per ton for beets delivered to the bin, with 5.00 dollars per ton at the railroad station and 4.50 to 3.14 cents per additional percent test. Freight and handling add costs, farmers haul to rail or bin, plant cites past payments and expected taxes, signaling continued large beet operations this season.

Masons Ban Petitions for SALOON Licenses

The Masonic grand lodge of Arkansas adopted a resolution making it a Masonic offense for members to sign or circulate petitions seeking saloon licenses. Arkansas law requires a majority of white adults in a community to sign a petition for a saloon license, with effect January 1.

Rural high school display showcases modern health and vocational work

A room in the Ann Arbor High school was converted into a one room rural schoolhouse with health oriented features and modern equipment for manual training domestic science and typewriting. A remarkable basketry sewing art material woodwork display proves such work is possible in a one room school. The high school basketball team plays Greenville at Greenville Friday evening.

Alma College Choral Club Opens Season With Verdi Bizet Selections

Alma College Choral Club presents the first concert of the season in the college chapel on Tuesday evening December 9. Under Prof. Reese Veatch the chorus offers popular selections from Carmen Fanat Lucia di Lammermoor Lohengrin I Trovatore and other masterpieces. The ensemble is praised for balanced parts and improved performance.

Elevator accident awards 3000 to Mrs Fafty

In San Diego a superior court jury awarded $3000 to Mrs. Cora Fafty after more than an hour deliberation. She sued Alfred Stahel & Sons for 12500 for injuries when an elevator rose from the sidewalk in front of the Stahel store at Fifth and C streets and knocked her down. Attorney Adam Thompson represented the plaintiff and Gordon Gray the defendant. Mrs Faity was formerly a resident of Alma.

Big Odd Fellows Supper at Riverdale Game Feed

The Riverdale Odd Fellows annual supper on Monday December 1 1912 drew the largest crowd yet and was a social success. Captains James Schuepp and Gert Osborn led high scoring teams, with Jim narrowly beating his opponent by about 40 points. The event featured skillful cooking of game by Bert and finished with one of the best suppers ever served. John Mathews Jr left for California after visiting his parents for six weeks.

Arcada Farmers Club Thanksgiving Meeting Held at Finks

The Arcada Farmers Club held its Thanksgiving meeting at Mr and Mrs John Fink s home. About seventy five members and friends attended the dinner and part of the program was cut for lack of time. Mr Irish who recently moved to Alma entertained with music and Miss Louise Hainline sang. Dandelions were in bloom December first.
