John Lanshaw, longtime local figure, died Friday morning at his Forest Hill area home. Funeral arrangements not yet announced.
John Lanshaw a respected Gratiot pioneer dies after a years long illness at his home. Born 1829 near Hamburg Germany he moved to Mauricetown New Jersey then to Gratiot county with his wife and four children. He built up a prominent farm and celebrated golden wedding with his wife last August before declining. He leaves four children nine grandchildren and a wide circle of friends. Funeral services were held Sunday at his home with burial in Wright Cemetery after a service by Rev. G H Carl of Alma.
Bert Woodward Clinton Nelson and Alvin Mon left Monday evening for Stanton to finalize the Colby ranch deal in Montcalm County. The 1000 acre tract is hailed as a premier central Michigan land holding planned for stocking and management by qualified personnel.
Thirty seven gentlemen answered invitations from the Brotherhood of Andrew and Philip for a stag banquet at the Presbyterian church on Friday. The event, decorated with chrysanthemum wreaths, featured Prof A N Lee as chef, toasts by Beaske Babby and J T Ewing, and praise for the organization’s aim to spread Christ’s Kingdom among men.
Through Rev C E B Hoag and the Methodist church Alma and vicinity can hear the Sunday sermon and singing at home via a telephone transmitter linked to the Bell central office. Twelve isolated listeners were recorded last Sunday enjoying the service from their homes.
The seventh district convention of the Michigan Christian Endeavor Union is in session at the Presbyterian church over today and tomorrow. Delegates are expected to fill the meeting with interest and enthusiasm. Friday features include a 9 am devotional led by Alma CUE, a 10 am business session, papers, and a 2 pm address by Rev. Chas E Scott. The Saturday program includes a Junior Rally, a 2 pm talk by Rev. J A Dankel, and a Model Prayer Meeting at 8:30 am.

Fire department responded to a false alarm Sunday after someone misdialed or misdirected a call, leading crews away from the intended location near State Street and College. A minor fire behind Gobel's saloon prompted the scare, with warning to avoid repeat errors.
Early this week Medler and Demuth completed a major business change with Demuth retiring and Charles H. Silsbee purchasing the partnership. Silsbee, known in Alma for years, will oversee the new setup while Vermeulen’s clothing department and Poncer Hat Works connections remain involved. Medler will manage the remaining operations as chief engineer takes on other duties.
Lam B Hayt writes from East Pasadena California describing travel from Alma, ranch plans, property values and subdivision growth near Los Angeles. He notes strawberry farming, crops and prices, living costs and utilities, weather contrasts with Michigan, visits to Orange Redlands Santa Ana and checks with Alma friends.
A Michigan Endeavor planning committee targets the next biennial convention in a central state location with a 40 000 member base. Saginaw hosts the executive board meeting November 18 with Wm Shaw of Boston likely a speaker and Rev Ernest Bourner Allen of Toledo a featured leader. The event introduces a Michigan Veterans Union of Christian Endeavor rally banquet and the observance of Michigan Christian Endeavor Day on March 11 16 with a planned program and expanded activities.
