Obituary of Mrs B B Ellison of Gratiot County

Obituary notes Mrs. B B Ellison aged eighty five of Gratiot County, died August 20 after years of poor health. Born June 2 1825 in Saratoga New York, she married B B Ellison in 1842 and lived in Jackson County before moving to Gratiot in 1868. She had three children, six grandchildren, two great grandchildren, and was a longtime member of the Christian church in Forestville. Funeral Tuesday at 2 pm, Rev Carl of Alma officiating, burial in West Cemetery beside her husband. The community extends sympathy.

Saturday, August 20, members of the Ely family gathered at Mr. and Mrs. G. S. Ward's Woodworth avenue home. Attendees included G. S. Ward and his wife, Mrs. Walter Edwards and two children, W 8. The afternoon featured social conversation and refreshments, with all present enjoying the gathering.

Alma College alumni hold first Northern Michigan reunion at Omena

About forty Alma College students and alumni gathered at Omena on Grand Traverse Bay August 14 for the first annual Northern Michigan association reunion. Attendees came from Elk Rapids Old Mission and surrounding towns aboard the launch Anna Theresa. The event featured a meal, a ball game won 6 to 4, and notable performances by Davy Johnson and the Anderson Burke and Morse groups. Women’s throwing contest went to Nina Martin with a distance of 1124 feet. Dolorn Manuel placed second. The group planned return visits and future reunions after September 14.

Alma Resident Perry Pettit Dies at 62

Word arrives Thursday morning announcing the death of Perry D. Pettit a Gratiot county resident aged 62. He had suffered a brief illness and his passing comes as a surprise to many across the county after living in Gratiot for 55 years.

Tragic Grand Trunk collision near Durand kills fifteen

A Grand Trunk passenger train struck another near Duffield east of Durand, leaving fifteen dead and many injured. The rear sleeper of Chicago Montreal No 14 was torn apart after No 4 crashed into it at speed. One Montreal passenger, A Davis Trenton, survived. others burned or trapped. Fire and confusion followed as investigators sorted identities and blamed conditions.

Detroit Methodist conference to mark bicentennial session

Preliminary plans for the Annual Detroit Methodist conference open Sept 21 in Detroit with a joint Sept 25 session in the Central M. E. church commemorating the 100th anniversary of Michigan’s first Methodist society. Bishop William McDowell will head the Detroit conference and Bishop Earl Cranston the Michigan conference. About 1,000 ministers and lay delegates are expected, with Michigan laymen meeting Thursday and possibly staying for the Saturday session. Rev. W B Doty of Alma will attend the Michigan conference and may return next year.

Miller Bros acquire shoe stock and remodel two stores

Miller Bros the grocer has bought the stock of shoes in the first store root east of their grocery and will remodel the interiors replacing old shelves with ceiling height units and rolling ladders. Social at Wright Park Picnic for Alma Parsonage
