Picnic Aug 27 Unites Alma Catholic Parishes For Benefit

The Catholics of Alma St Louis Simmerton gather in Alma City Park on Saturday August 27 for a parish benefit at the pew parsonage. Sandwiches coffee cake and ice cream served from noon onward. A baseball game between parish players and an outside team starts at 3 pm. An orchestra will entertain. Miss Francie Arbor arrives from Alpena for a visit.

Gratiot County Man and Woman Held on Desertion Charge

Gratiot readers learn that William Johnson, 24, who lived with Florence Woodcock at the Octagon hotel, is arrested on a desertion charge. Johnson and Woodcock, both from Ithaca area, were arraigned before Justice Fraser and remanded to the county jail in default of $400 bail. Woodcock is about 20 and Mrs Johnson is seeking a divorce as Johnson awaits circuit court trial.

A group of gypsies who had passed through Alma a year earlier returned Monday. City Marshal John Wright ordered them to leave within about two minutes after they settled near Swartsont's grocery. Wright and Convis then helped the group move on toward St. Louis.

Mr and Mrs T A Johnston of Okmulgee Oklahoma arrive in Alma Monday to visit friends. He formerly managed Central Michigan Produce Co and left in 1908 with Lucius Bagley to buy a Morris Oklahoma bank. Okmulgee, county seat with 7000 people, has street cars paved streets and modern conveniences. He predicts his home will double in five years.

Dwight W. Robinson opened the Pollasky stock store to the public for a day long sale. The shop stayed crowded from morning until midnight with shoppers stocking up on bargains. The sale, 30 days long, moved additional stock to the south room of the I O O F building with Vernon Wright taking charge thereafter.

The Ann Arbor Railroad company sues Grant township in Clare county to recover 15000 dollars plus 3000 accrued interest on bonds issued in 1885 for road construction.
