Over one hundred fifty business men backed the Chautauqua program in Alma after a week of lectures and entertainments. Sir John Foster Fraser spoke on The Checkerboard of Europe and James Pershing’s brother addressed Backing Up the Boys. The Hitlet operatic company presented The Chocolate Soldier, and Capt. George Campbell spoke on A Soldier of the Sky. Dr. Gunsaulus discussed America and the World War here to defend democracy. Benjamin Burkholder, 66, died after nephritis. funeral held at home and body sent to Alto for burial.

Alma Boy Corporal Myers Killed in Action
Corporal George Myers of the 126th Infantry Co K is reported killed in action on August 1. He was a longtime Alma resident, educated in Alma public schools and a graduate of Alma High School. Myers was the second Alma man to die in the present war, with the nation observing a service flag star turned to gold in his honor.

Died in Service Corporal Sanchez Laid to Rest
Corporal Eluid Sanchez of Alma, a member of Co E, 87th Field Artillery, drowned at Camp Dix on Wednesday. His body is being brought home for a Friday funeral at 2:00 p.m. Michigan State Troops will attend. Sanchez came to Alma from New Mexico four years ago, worked through college, and pursued an officer's commission before enlisting.

Memorial Service Honors Alma Piret and Wallace Wier
Memorial services filled the town Sunday to honor Alma Piret, slain July 20, and Wallace T. Wier who died at age 44. The memorial included a mixed quartette collection, sermons by Rev J Frank Jacheon and Rev Priest, and remarks on sacrifice, world peace, and duty to country. Wier’s funeral was held at home with burial in Clare after private services.
