Chautauqua a great success in Alma week

Over one hundred fifty business men backed the Chautauqua program in Alma after a week of lectures and entertainments. Sir John Foster Fraser spoke on The Checkerboard of Europe and James Pershing’s brother addressed Backing Up the Boys. The Hitlet operatic company presented The Chocolate Soldier, and Capt. George Campbell spoke on A Soldier of the Sky. Dr. Gunsaulus discussed America and the World War here to defend democracy. Benjamin Burkholder, 66, died after nephritis. funeral held at home and body sent to Alto for burial.

Alma Boy Corporal Myers Killed in Action

Corporal George Myers of the 126th Infantry Co K is reported killed in action on August 1. He was a longtime Alma resident, educated in Alma public schools and a graduate of Alma High School. Myers was the second Alma man to die in the present war, with the nation observing a service flag star turned to gold in his honor.

New Officials Under Charter for Alma City Work

Alma voters will see a charter change to add city manager clerk treasurer marshal two constables city physician purchasing agent city attorney building inspector and sealer of weights and measures all appointed by the commission for terms up to a year with qualifications and oaths to be filed within specified deadlines Local residents are given hiring priority for city work under the new plan and the oath rules for officers are outlined with citizenship and residency requirements.

Gratiot County Draft Registration Saturday

Gratiot County men aged twenty one and older must register with the Gratiot County Draft Board on Saturday August 24 at Wrights furniture store in Alma. The War Department plans to call these men if needed under the new draft law.

Alma Public Schools to Open for New Term

Alma public schools begin Tuesday September 3 with enrollment rising beyond prior years due to city growth. New courses include French replacing German and General Science replacing physiography, with military training expanding and a school nurse to be employed.

Died in Service Corporal Sanchez Laid to Rest

Corporal Eluid Sanchez of Alma, a member of Co E, 87th Field Artillery, drowned at Camp Dix on Wednesday. His body is being brought home for a Friday funeral at 2:00 p.m. Michigan State Troops will attend. Sanchez came to Alma from New Mexico four years ago, worked through college, and pursued an officer's commission before enlisting.

Alma youths lead in home canning and demonstrations

Alma boys and girls clubs promote garden harvests and canning with half day kitchen sessions and home canning tallies. Demonstrations in towns and a public event August 29 will select top teams to compete for prizes and a possible trip to Michigan State Fair. Awards include War Savings stamps and cash.

Memorial Service Honors Alma Piret and Wallace Wier

Memorial services filled the town Sunday to honor Alma Piret, slain July 20, and Wallace T. Wier who died at age 44. The memorial included a mixed quartette collection, sermons by Rev J Frank Jacheon and Rev Priest, and remarks on sacrifice, world peace, and duty to country. Wier’s funeral was held at home with burial in Clare after private services.

Seventeen Gratiot registrants called to Camp Custer move

Seventeen men from Gratiot County registrants have been summoned to Camp Custer on August 2 for physical examinations. About fifty-seven registrants were called. forty are NR. The draft board lists the names of those examined and those being called today, including multiple Alma, St Louis, and Perrinton residents.
