Torbensen Nine to Clash With Republics in Alma Friday

Friday at 3 30 PM the Torbensen Axle Company nine of Cleveland, champions of that city, meets the Republics of Alma in a bid to stage the biggest baseball game in Alma. The Republics include star players and the showdown follows a 4 4 exhibition with the New York Giants in Akron. A postgame banquet at the Republic cafeteria will honor both teams. Lieutenant J A Picard spoke on war work and America’s role, urging victory through thought speech work and prayer.

Local Traveler Hurt In Marion Train Collision

Burt Hicks traveling salesman from the city was badly injured last Friday when a freight train struck the motor car he rode in near Marion. The southbound vehicle failed to clear the crossing and was struck on the tracks. Twelve people in the car sustained injuries of varying severity.

Alma man Serg Leonard dies in action in France

Serg Harry Leonard son of Frank Leonard of Alma was killed July 21 in France, becoming the second Alma man killed in action. He served in Co FB, 128th Infantry, part of the Rainbow division in the western front drive after two years of service including Calumet strike and Mexican border duty. Other named locals also listed as casualties.

Local Hero Harry James Leonard Dies for Humanity

Harry James Leonard born 1881 in Fenton died serving the great cause of humanity. He moved to Alma, attended Alma public schools and Alma College, graduated 1905, and was a Valparaiso telegraphy graduate. He leaves father F A Leonard and brother B Leonard, with many friends mourning his loss amid war news including Serg Clarence B Perkins and Howard C Wolverton. Perkins, born 1886 in Isabella County, enlisted in Milwaukee then served in the Soo the Philippines and Alaska before training at Mattsburg and Camp Green. Fifty three Gratiot men register for draft

Fifty three young men from Gratiot County, all 21 since June 5, 1954 and before August 24, 1954, registered to serve if needed. The list includes numerous local names and towns, with Dr A E Waller of the U S Department of Agriculture speaking at Ithaca on wheat seed treatment to prevent smut and aid Allies and troops. He plans to stay through the county fair and speak at the Illinois picnic next Saturday.

Gratiot county honors roll lists eight men who died or were wounded serving in World War I.
