The Mt Pleasant Transports, riding a 14 game win streak, were swept by Alma Republics 7 to 3 on Sunday after losing 7 to 3 on Saturday. Hagerman pitched superbly for the Republics while Olmsted’s and Main’s teams battled. Dunckle and Meidell led Republics with three hits apiece as crowd over 3000 watched. Ground-rule field limits kept extra-base hits down for Transports. series continues with games in Alma and a later schedule.
Community leaders in Alma advance plans for new playgrounds and a major park development. City Manager William E. Reynolds has already improved Wright Park with new awnings and amusements for children, while others in the council and school board pledge cooperation to provide wholesome recreation and exercise for youngsters.
About 0 enthusiastic women of Republican persuasion met at the city hall to discuss campaign matters. Mrs. W. H. Shepard chaired Gratiot county and introduced speakers urging organization and registration. An officers slate was elected with Mrs. Shepard as Chairman and Mrs. F. E. Pollusky as Vice Chairman. Sub-chairmen were named across wards. The group spent the week canvassing house to house to gather addresses and voter policies and urged registration before August 21 to ensure voting in the fall election.
Fortino Brothers wholesale Alma fruit dealers bought the two story block at Euclid and Michigan from Roy Miller of Lansing and Carl Harry of Alma for about 9000 dollars. They plan a fruit and candy store with a soda fountain and ice cream parlor on the east side, remodeling the interior before fixtures, aiming to open in 30 to 60 days.
Charles C. Ward Henry H. Soule and Harley Williams back a new enterprise in Alma. The Truck Parts and Foundry company has taken over the Western Carburetor plant and begun operating with about ten workers. It plans to grow to forty or fifty as business improves. The capitalization is 12000 dollars. The firm, backed by three Alma leaders, expects better industrial conditions soon and, via an arrangement with the Alma Board of Trade, will wind up the Western Carburetor company’s affairs as it settles in.
A large Strand theater audience viewed the Price of Peace showings by the U S Signal Corps and a running lecture by Sergeant Elmer R Snyder of Grand Rapids recruiting party. He spoke on educational and vocational opportunities for young men in the new peace army, highlighting prewar to postwar education, courses at camps, and the aim to build a capable citizen soldier. The program stressed that enlistment enables civilian reentry with marketable skills and better citizenship, with continued education as a core objective.
The Alma Board of Trade planned reorganization at a Thursday meeting held in the fire station. A committee proposed renaming the board to Alma Chamber of Commerce to align with the National Chamber of Commerce. discussion on a secretary and meeting place followed with no final decision. Scout report featured, noting Troop 7’s return from Camp Platt after a week of trainings and activities at Rock Lake under leaders from Alma and Shepherd.

NEW EQUIPMENT SECURED Many Non Resident Students Are Making Application for Admission Here. The Alma public schools will open on Tuesday, September 7, and active preparations are already under way for the largest year that the local schools have ever had. It is anticipated that there will be the largest enrollment this year that either the high school or the grades have ever had. Many non-resident students have made application for admission to the high school during the past few weeks and the stream of applications is as yet showing no signs of a let down. The local school authorities are extending a welcome to all students who are desiring high school education or wish to take advantage of therade work in the local schools. The tuition for the high school is 350.00 and for the grades $40.00. Superintendent Kelder feels that the schools, in both grades and high school, will have a strong teaching staff, and coupled with the many improvements in equipment that have been made, promise for far better school work the coming year than ever before. Manual training, cooking and sewing equipment has been added in both the Republic and the Washington schools, giving a complete equipment for visual education. New advantages are being offered in the courses of study this year in the Junior and Senior high schools, which include academic, commercial and industrial courses for the high schools, as well as physical education for all boys and girls, forming an education for efficiency in every day life.
The ninth annual Hyde reunion gathered at Woodland park Ithaca on August 14 with about sixty attendees. Oliver Hyde of Alma was elected president for next year and Mildred Conlin of Alma was retained as secretary and treasurer. A program of recitations featured Doris McLaren and Hyde family members. Other locals from St Johns and nearby towns attended. Late lunch baskets and travel home concluded the event.
The Republic Trucks schedule a two game set with the Toledo Rail Lights in Toledo to fill open dates after Logan Squares canceled games with Alma. Manager Callahan of Logan Squares blames a blacklist, a weak reason amid clashes with Olmsted, while Rail Lights hold a strong edge from recent Alma wins and past wins over the Squares.
Two boys aged eleven and twelve were taken before Justice P. L. Johnson for bicycle thefts. They planned to steal bikes, disassemble them, hide the parts, and reuse them to build new bicycles. Parents are settling with victims, and authorities doubt further action.
Late Friday Alma firemen rushed to the Alma Electric and Battery Co at East Superior and Gratiot to tackle a car blaze. The workroom in the rear burst into flames but prompt hose work contained the fire and saved the city from a major disaster while only the automobile undergoing repairs was damaged.
Following a full inventory now underway at the Republic Motor Truck Company plant, operations are expected to restart September 1. General manager O W Hayes announced the plants closed Thursday evening for the stock check, with the inventory to be completed in every detail by the target date. DeLuxe Candies are best.
The Central Michigan Light & Power Co announces an August billing increase for all customers with small users facing 10 percent higher charges and a 5 percent penalty for bills unpaid by the tenth. Management cites higher coal, labor, and material costs after the coal contract expired, and warns further changes are possible if the market does not adjust.
The Bollinger family gathered at Carson Bollinger Grove on Fish Creek August 14 with 127 members from Michigan Ohio and Indiana. A volunteer program delighted attendees. A city commission proposal to fund a new South State street bridge across Pine River and beautify approaches was rejected for lack of funds and voter consent.
