Reed Charles Latimer a long time Gratiot County resident died at his home west of Alma on August 10 1914 aged 80 years He was born March 1 1843 in Schoharie County New York son of Ruben Latimer and Rebecca Whitbeck He moved to Michigan engaged in farming and built the First Methodist Church in Alma contributing to its establishment He was married twice first to Susan Emelyn Parry and then to Coly Follek He leaves a large family and is buried in Riverside cemetery

Storms of Friday and Saturday Scorch Gratiot County 1914
A sequence of severe electrical storms struck Alma and surrounding Gratiot County causing widespread damage. Lightning tore the east gable of George Bargood’s home, shattered windows, and scorched siding while his family narrowly avoided harm. J W Robinson’s barn near Vestaburg burned with crops inside, estimated loss well over 10000. Isabella county’s Coe church and several barns were also set ablaze. An early Saturday night electric storm illuminated Alma again, destroying northern farm buildings by Kiebbing and lasting until near three in the morning. The events marked the severest Friday and Saturday storms of the 1914 Gratiot season.

Caple Hardware Co held a demonstration on Fred Bell’s farm near Alma showing setting of steel fence posts and erection of fifty rods of American fence. Two men drove fifty line posts in two hours, unrolled wire with an automobile, stretched and fastened it, with the north end post cemented in place. The American line post is a tapered tube with the larger end in the ground, and all posts are heavily zinc coated. The company highlights the fence as proof of American steel post suitability for farmers.

Stroke near Dewitt strikes Seth Tubbs on road
Eaton Rapids Review reports Seth A Tubbs suffered a stroke of paralysis Tuesday afternoon while driving from Alma where his family had been visiting. He stopped the car,Was helped by a driver and physician, and remained stable overnight though not feeling well recently. Friends in Alma hope for a speedy recovery.

The new weights and measures law places supervision under the state dairy and food department, effective August 15. It bans the bottomless peck for being deceptive and requires dry measures for non liquids, with penalties for violators. Carter Dead After Illness at Park Lake
George S. Carter, 30, died at his father's home 608 Wright avenue after several weeks of illness. He lived at Park Lake, came to the city seeking relief, and is survived by a widow, two daughters Mildred and Myrtle, his parents, and a brother. Services were at the Christian church Friday with interment in Riverdale cemetery. Rev. Mudge officiated at the church and graveside.
