Gas Rates Raised by Michigan Public Utilities Commission
The Michigan Public Utilities Commission granted Gra-Got County Gas Co. a new rate increase for Ithaca, Breckenridge, St. Louis, and Alma. The rate tiers start at $2.00 per thousand cubic feet up to 5 000, then $1.90 for next 10 000, and $1.80 for consumption beyond 15 000, with a ten cent discount. Discount payment deadline shifts to the 10th of each month. The order notes higher material costs since June and insufficient revenues to cover operating expenses.

Robin Hood to Open Alma Theatre Season with Dunbar Cast
Manager C A Miller secures Ralph Dunbar's Reginald DeKoven opera Robin Hood for the Strand Theatre opening Monday August 23. The all star company, about forty with a large orchestra, will be the largest musical production ever seen in Alma. Subscriptions are selling at the theatre and deposits are urged to guarantee seats, as demand may exceed capacity. The production is billed to tour surrounding towns and may lead to further Dunbar company engagements if interest remains strong. The Toledo Mail Lights, after defeats, won a two game series from NN and of Chicago recently.

The Alma plant of Michigan Sugar will construct a 28 by 94 foot frame boarding house on Court avenue near the plant to aid employees and visiting field men. The $20,000 building will include a large dining room, kitchen, fifteen sleeping rooms, and is to be completed within sixty days, under Kerbs & Son of Saginaw.

Ringling and Barnum Circus Draw Record Alma Crowd
Nearly 24 000 people attended the Ringling Brothers and Barnum & Bailey show in Alma last Thursday with about 2000 inside the big top for the afternoon performance. The crowd overflowed the race course edge while watching the show and the afternoon audience was the largest in Alma yet. Evening attendance approached 6000 as the circus wrapped up.

Michigan farmers are said to be defrauded by cattle breeders in the state selling Shorthorn bulls under stock company plans at far above value. Bulls bought for 150 to 200 dollars allegedly sold for 500 to 1000 dollars. Palmer Brothers of Belding named among dealers. Extension agents from Michigan Agricultural College and county agent Alexander MacVittie investigated, finding bulls 12 to 15 months old with prices up to 200 dollars and little regard for pedigree or individuality.

Pickpocket Taken Here on Circus Day
Thomas Plarrity was arrested at Union Depot Thursday morning after attempting to steal Silvers Abott’s pocketbook. Abbott thwarted the theft, grabbed the thief, and Plarrity was jailed for safekeeping. Bail arrangements were made and later forfeited when the hearing did not proceed as scheduled. Plarrity claimed a residence near Saginaw but could not confirm, impugning his stated location.

Robbery at Martin Stores on State Street
Thieves broke into the Martin Stores Corp on State Street last Thursday evening and stole goods valued at from ten to four hundred dollars. Entry was gained by a forced window. Two to three suits of clothes and other items were taken before the culprits fled. Miss Anna May Vandhorn daughter of Mr and Mrs Law Vandhorn and Rey Law Perry son of Mr and Mrs Perry were quietly married last Thursday morning in Alma by J Lew Potts judge of probate. The couple were accompanied to Ithaca by a brother and sister of the groom and later left for a ten day trip to northern Michigan resorts. Mrs Roy L Perry was born near Sherman Michigan and has lived in Alma area. Mr Perry has been an employee of The Record for years and served in the United States Navy during the war.
