Vestaburg Holds Big Third Field Day Celebration

Vestaburg celebrated a crowded Third Day Field Day with 2000 attendees from Montcalm and west Gratiot counties. Events included footraces, a fat man race, potato race, a line of entertainments, balloon ascent, and horse races. Vestaburg beat Twin City 8 to 6 in baseball, continuing a twelve wins in thirteen games streak behind pitcher Brown. Del Hicks hurled for Twin City. Thorp caught for Vestaburg. A balloon ascent then rose a thousand feet, followed by feverish horse racing, notable Flora Key and Jack Johnson contesting the half mile heat.

Cooking School at M E Church in Alma Draws Women

After a Methodist church talk on Free Domestic Science by Miss Bingham, about one hundred ladies attend daily cooking lectures. They learn plain chocolate cake and pineapple cake while exploring pastry techniques and recipes like nut bread and lemon pie. Attendance grows as Alma women respond to the opportunity and the program continues through the weekend.

Alma Visit Highlights Republic Truck Co Expansion In Michigan

Thirty five Mt. Pleasant businessmen toured Alma's Republic Motor Truck Company plant, witnessing a factory expanding from 250 workers to 500 by next January while producing ten trucks daily. The visit included a tour of Senator King’s home grounds, praised as Edenlike, and inspired local effort to boost Mt. Pleasant industry.

A Knights Templar gathering in Ithaca hosted by Sir Knight J M Montigel featured a motorcade procession from Alma to his home. Frater Cyrus Gardner as toastruster opened remarks urging Montigel’s balance of duty and enjoyment as a Chautauqua season lecture by Doctor Barker was noted. Music by local soloists followed by refreshments, with guests from Mt Pleasant and St Louis.

Alma Chautauqua Opens Tuesday with Star Entertainers

Alma Chautauqua opens Tuesday afternoon and runs through August 17 with eight days of lectures and music led by Alice Nielsen and a roster including Sylvester Long Frank Dixon the Savranotis and the Music Makers. Civic League tickets priced at two dollars and a half cover the majority of acts and promise a packed program with a public sale push to reach seven hundred tickets.

Crooks Chosen Alma College President Prospect
