Quota Topped On Wednesday in Alma Volunteering Closed

The City of Alma officially reported the quota was topped on Wednesday ending volunteering efforts. City officials announced closure of volunteer activities as the program reached its limit.

Alma surpasses its quota in three days of volunteering, reaching $120,500 with volunteer subscriptions led by local residents. Banks and booths continued collecting as employers and corporations pledged further support, and officials anticipate Alma doubling its goal as the campaign ends, urging Gratiot county to finish the job.

Still raid targets Austrian moonshine producer in Breckenridge

Austrian resident John Kupres living near Breckenridge was raided by Revenue agents last week. He was arrested making corn liquor and jailed before being taken to Saginaw for local processing. About five gallons of moonshine were seized. Authorities believe he recently returned from Pint with stock and liquor reportedly made from a raisin-based mash.

Saginaw high school loeball team faces strong Arthur Mellon

The Saginaw high school loeball team, coached by Alles Michaelson, will play Arthur Mellon in a midweek metioottens showdown. Deputies confiscated meat stock from Copak near Breckenridge after a liquor test showed twenty eight percent alcohol. Kupros, linked to Copak, was arrested and bound over to May grand jury.

Treasury Allots Subscriptions On Victory Loan

Treasury Department announces full allotment for subscriptions up to ten thousand dollars and prorating for larger amounts. Carter H. Glass, secretary, rules all under ten thousand are allotted in full even if total loan exceeds four and a half billion. County precincts urged to keep soliciting as some will not reach goal and others must cover the shortfalls. In Gratiot over ten thousand subscriptions will be rare, and reductions are unlikely.

Easter services here splendid and well attended

Easter observances ran through Alma churches with large crowds. First Presbyterian offered a special Sunday school program and morning service drawing a top attendance in years. Evening cantata Eastertide featured soloists and choir under Hosmer. Baptist and Methodist churches reported strong services with special music and sermons. St John’s Episcopal held notable Easter music and sermons by Rev J Frank Jackson. Church of Christ emphasized citywide programs and impactful sermons by Rev Raum.

Howe Pictures to Show Lyman Howe on Tuesday May Day

Heroic Rescue by Mockridge Saves Child From Fire

Mr Mockridge of East Alma acted quickly last Thursday to save a girl burned by a stove fire at the Teed residence on Grove Ave. He carried the blazing stove from the house and doused flames on a child’s clothing, preventing a possible house destruction and serious injuries.
