Gratiot County dispatches call for a local drive urging residents to meet a substantial quota of more than 700000 dollars. Officials emphasize community support and volunteer participation to fund county needs.
Gratit county launches three day volunteer subscription drive for the Victory Liberty Loan. Quota stands at 702,100 dollars with emphasis on patriotism and safe four year notes at four and three fourth percent. Townships set up banks and schools as donation sites. Local committees list numerous banks and stores as subscription points.
Mrs Tou Landis about 44 and her two year old child died in a Monday fire sparked by a stove and possible kerosene. The blaze left Mrs Landis and a two year old dead, while her mother and six month old grandchild escaped with serious burns but are expected to recover.
The United States Government trophy train toured Ithaca and Alma on Sunday to promote the Victory Loan drawing perhaps the largest crowds yet at loan events. Nearly four thousand gathered in Ithaca to view the baby tank and trophies from France and Flanders. In Alma the train parade drew thousands, with the tank interchanging between units, and speeches by CW Turner of Chicago and Serg Burford among others stressing loan support.
Charles R Murphy mayor elect and Alma city commissioners met informally Monday to discuss plans aimed at the city's welfare. They outlined a definite yearlong agenda and will not disclose specifics until they assume office on May first.

The Alma Rich high students dominated the subdistrict oratorical and declamation contest held at Ithaan Friday. J Uunnein, Ayneld, and Mint Argivetu represented their school with declamation and oration pieces, the judges awarding top marks to Ayneld for "Tous saint L'Ouverture." The district contest will be held later, likely by the fourth Friday, with expected participation from Battle Creek Lansing and Detroit high schools.
