Death of a Gratiot Pioneer John S Nevins

John S Nevins, early Gratiot County settler, died at his son N N Nevins' Ithaca home on April 14 at age 88. Born August 21, 1821 in Hanover New York, he moved with his family to Lenawee, married Rosina Brailey, then settled in Arcada Township for 55 years before moving to Ithaca. Survived by three children, two brothers, and a sister, with funeral at Bailey schoolhouse Arcada led by Rev F M Brown. burial Bailey Cemetery.

Infant Johnson Dies at Nine Months in Local Home

The infant son of Mr and Mrs Archie Johnson of 128 Court Ave died Saturday April 16 at home after a 48 hour illness from bowel trouble. Funeral held at the house Monday at 10 30 with Rev H L Crain officiating and burial at Wright cemetery. The baby is described as bright and mourned by many friends.

Alma High School Schedule Includes Alma Games

The high school basketball calendar lists games with Alma visiting Mt. Pleasant Ithaca and Saginaw opponents and Alma hosting multiple towns. Dates are provisional with Owosso and others to be added. A rumor claims ex superintendent Palmer bought the Clare Sentinel from Welch & Bennett this week.

Maxwell Cars Dominate Alma Spring Market Reports

The local Maxwell agent A C Wyant in Alma says spring auto demand is strong with fourteen cars sold already this season. He notes models include seven runabouts, four four pass, and two touring cars priced from 600 to 1500 dollars. Operating costs are claimed around 20 cents a day for about 100 miles weekly, based on owner surveys. Wyant holds exclusive agency for Gratiot Montcalm and Isabella counties and expects more sales. They planned a third annual track meet and promotion exercises in Alma on the last Friday in May, with events including track and field, eighth grade ceremonies, and a tennis tournament.

Gus Wolansky of Wheeler faced an auto joy ride incident when a Clare men from Clare Michigan five-men car struck his horse and killed it after failing to yield. The auto fled toward Merrill and was stopped at Hemlock. The Clare men, identified as prominent locals, will likely be brought to Ithaca to face charges.
