Through Train to Chicago Inaugurated With First Run

The Pere Marquette inaugurates its through train service with eastbound and westbound runs. The Western Limited departs Bay City at 11 10, Alma 1 42, arrives Chicago 10 00. Eastbound Michigan Limited leaves Chicago 8 00, Alma 1 80, Bay City 6 20.

Forest Products Laboratory Opens at Madison Wis

The Forest Products Laboratory at Madison Wisconsin will formally open on June 4. A cooperative effort by the U S Department of Agriculture and the University of Wisconsin, the state provides the new building and utilities while the Agriculture Department supplies equipment and staff. The world’s largest wood testing laboratory will employ 35 to 40 people and will study wood waste reduction, timber preservation, and timber testing with engineers in wood preservation and chemical engineering filling vacancies in May and June.

New Bank at Pompeii Planned by Local Stockholders

The Pompeii State Bank in Pompeii has its stock subscribed at 820,000. A lot at the village square northeast corner was bought. Chas H. Baker of Ithaca prepared plans for a brick building about 22250 feet, to be modern and up to date. Completion and opening are expected early next year.

Parochial Building to Rise West of St Marys Church

Through Father Mulvey and parish members a parochial building will begin soon on the first lot west of St Marys Church. The two story modern brick structure will cover a 42 by 28 foot ground space with paving brick and a stove on the ground floor. Construction is expected to start in May and reach completion by early fall.

Silver Medal Contest At Alma Baptist Church

The Silver Medal Contest under the Woman's Christian Temperance Union will be held at the Alma Baptist Church on Friday evening May 6. Contestants include Kahtheena Austin Ruth Danham Nellie Nelson Ruth Porterfield Ruth Dutt Florence DePlanta Bessie Oswald and Helen Cary. Alma council approves claims and druggist bonds in regular meeting

Regular meeting of the Alma common council was held in council rooms with Mayor Pro Tem Russell presiding. Members present were Fuller Sonle Russet Glass Bansill Fullerton and Fraker. The journal was read and approved. Reports recommended paying election commissioners one dollar each and approving bonds for Grover Bros J M Wheaton & Sons and Chas Rhodes. Appointments were made to committees on street fire health printing and more, and confirmed.

Fragmentary City Council Minutes Include Payments and Adjournment

Incomplete report shows clerks orders and payments to various laborers and vendors. The council, on motion by Alderman Russell and second by Alderman Puller, adjourned after noting charges including Michigan Payer Co and other labor entries, signed by the mayor and city clerk.

Foster Fraker Injured In Boating Engine Mishap

Fraker suffered a severe injury when his left index finger was crushed in the gears of a gasoline launch during a short trial run. He, alone aboard, managed the boat to shore and walked to a drug store before help arrived. Doctors treated him and he was taken home by auto.

Brainless Burglar Arrests Highlight Middleton Crime

The Middleton Record details burglaries in which Alvah Blair’s jewelry store was entered and ten chains plus a fountain pen stolen. Richard Dickson, found asleep in a hay mow near a barn, confessed to stealing the revolver and jewelry, and faces sentencing soon. The piece notes Dickson’s character and local pursuit, plus a December Philippine Agricultural Review issue received by the Record office.

Lorenzo Carter R. A. R. veteran Laid To Rest At Local Methodist Church

Funeral services for Lorenzo Carter, longstanding city resident and Civil War era veteran, were held Sunday at the Methodist church with Rev. Duty officiating. The G. A. R. post attended in full, and burial followed at Riverside cemetery conducted by comrades. Carter, born in Pennsylvania sixty three years ago, is survived by several children, including Harvey Carter of Elwell street, and his death came after a severe stroke.

Local High School Beats Mt Pleasant In Baseball Tilt

Last Saturday the local high school team defeated Mt Pleasant at Mt Pleasant 6 to 2. Alger Wood pitched for the locals with eight strikeouts and five hits allowed, both earned runs. Laframbors pitched well for Mt Pleasant, yielding twelve hits as Wood hit the game’s only extra base. Paul Kress led hitters with three singles. Wood Weaver and Fishbeck added two each. Mt Pleasant’s center fielder starred defensively and had two of their five hits.

Calendar reform proposal to realign year with 13 months

Baron von Horte-Martege plans to push a London Congress proposal to create a 13 month year of four weeks each and a 51 week year with a world holiday set between years. The plan aims for Monday on year and month starts and Sunday Easter fixed to April 7, with two international holidays only in leap years.

Michigan Tax Flow Boosts Primary School Fund on May 10

Deputy State Treasurer John Haarer reports Michigan will see primary school money surge to about 83.85 million on May 10 with possible overages as heavy taxpayers including railroads and utilities remit cash. About 757,000 children share the apportionment while the general fund holds over 1.15 million. Auditor-General Fuller lists railroad payments of 245,445 and 421.74 from a car loading firm protesting tax amounts tied to net earnings.

Counties to Build More Stone Roads This Year

State Highway Commissioner Ely says Oceana Muskegon and Mason counties will construct more stone roads than any three neighboring counties. Stone roads will replace dirt roads, with Ely and Deputy Rogers busy at road institutes to advance the project. Around May 23 they will tour the upper peninsula. credentials from newly elected township highway commissioners have been received by the state department, totaling 1,005.
