A local notice announces a cleanup event scheduled for Thursday and Friday, April 24 and 25. Community volunteers are invited to participate, with organizers outlining locations, drop-off points, and safety guidelines for participants.
Alma citizens and civic groups plan a city wide clean-up to remove ashes rubbish and debris from streets alleys and yards as spring cleaning begins. Officials stress cleaning alleys homes and business districts to improve appearance and assets, urging participation citywide.
City requires chickens kept in enclosures not near homes or water, weekly coop disinfection, and penalties up to 100 dollars or ninety days in jail. Continuous complaints prompt enforcement actions against violating owners.
The Daytona Gazette News reports Mr and Mrs W A Tuttle of Alma Michigan left Daytona Beach after a winter stay at the Osborne Orange Ave. They stopped in Jacksonville Atlanta Chattanooga and Cleveland Tennessee on the journey home. Mr Tuttle had been ill initially but improved and plans to return next winter. They praise Daytona scenery and local pleasures and subscribe to keep in touch. The notice ends with an ad for a new Klosed Krotch Union Suit at Fred Slater Men’s Wear.
The Gratiot County Y M C A Boys Conference 1913 concluded with a Sunday session in the schoolhouse auditorium. An opening banquet in Alma High gym hosted 348 boys, served by 45 Alma girls. Officers were elected: President J. R. Whitney, Vice President Merritt Miller, Secretary Carleton Spooner, Treasurer Carl Street. Ezra Ly Smith acted as toastmaster after Frank Hurst could not attend.
Ezra Smith presided over a lengthy Alma gathering with a banquet and program featuring speakers, music, and films. The event included group activities, papers on youth service, a parade through downtown, church meetings, and a farewell service led by Detroit officials, ending with a Resolution praising the community support for Gratiot County youths.
Over the past three days hosts opened homes and public buildings for the boys of the conference, making the stay a pleasure and of great value. Be It Resolved that the boys of the conference are acknowledged for their conduct and influence.
The conference expresses hearty appreciation for the boys work in entertaining and meeting trains and thanks ladies who served refreshments. It recognizes businessmen and local speakers who contributed time and money, and notes the success of the first Boy Scout Conference. Resolutions pledging minutes and newspaper publication are signed by Mark McGill, Chairman.
Subdistrict contest at Big Rapids drawn from Alma St Louis Fremont and White Cloud featured orations on Napoleon Bonaparte by Paul R Cash and Message to Garcia by Stanley Wizard. James Fairman of Big Rapids won oration on Deposition of the Saloon with Lillian Hildreth second in a tie with Cash after percentage calculation. Vera Wilkinson of St Louis won the declamation Spartacus to the Gladiators, with Ruth Tenny Deon Pant Stanley Stoddard and Blanche Murry among top contestants.
The Grazier county Board of Supervisors met in Ithaca last Tuesday and elected Fred Bradford of Arcada township as chairman. The Montcalm county dry majority should hold for two more years with 3 3 9 voting dry and 3 1 9 5 voting wet. The dry tally was down 395 from two years ago while the wet vote fell 47. The result implies voters were motivated, and sentiment remains similar to two years ago. G E Garnard, former Reed City Herald editor, is named superintendent of East Jordan schools.
Breckenridge gains a Farmers' elevator with 17000 dollars in stock already subscribed. First board of directors includes B L Case J S Doyle John Young F A Sexton George W Milligan Allen Sexton A L Giles JL Smith and Frank Howland. Officers elected are A L Giles president F A Sexton vice president B L Case secretary J S Doyle treasurer. A location committee is named and elevator operations will begin.
The next regular teachers examination will be held at the High school building Itha April 24 26 1913 beginning at 8 00 a m standard time. Write the Commissioner of Schools for Bulletin No 16 for general information on this examination. Attorney John M Dunham was in Breckenridge on business Monday.
A high school concert is scheduled for Wednesday evening April 28 in the high school auditorium. Students from the music program will perform selections across genres under the direction of the school's band and choir instructors.
MWR Albert Glockzin advertises a musical evening featuring the High School Chorus and Glee Club under Miss Me Greaham. Admission is 25 cents with 15 cents for choir children. The program promises unusual merit, opening promptly at 4 15 and urging citizens to attend.
The twenty eighth annual convention will be held at the Baptist church in Alma on Tuesday and Wednesday April 20 and 21. Mrs Calkins will speak Tuesday night with entertaining and educational address. Co Presidents Myrtle Youngs and Mary Seaver urge attendance.
