Alma’s Rapid Growth Sets City Pace in State

A census telegram to Alma from Congressman Joseph W. Pordney states the city’s population at 7,042, a 173.0 percent rise from 2,757 a decade ago. Experts note housing shortfalls and limited homes kept figures below expectations, while J. E. Converse opens a larger store on East Superior Street with an expanded optical department and new displays.

Primary gives state to Senator Johnson in Michigan note

Michigan delegates to the Republican National Convention were instructed for Senator Johnson of California, but Gratiot county favored Major General Leonard Wood with a 660 plurality. Alma and city wards showed light turnout in a county election, with Wood leading Johnson in most precincts for president and in several contests for National Committeeman. Several precincts detailed vote tallies for Wood, Johnson, Lowden, Hoover, Poindexter and McAdoo, with Democratic results listed for Connelly, Bryan, Palmer and Edwards.

New Hospital 15 Nearing Completion in Alma

Remodeling the Abbott home on Woodworth avenue into a private hospital for Dr. Thomas J. Carney advances toward completion. Eleven beds will be available with capacity for fourteen if needed. Rooms on multiple floors include a white finished operating room, a basement lab, dining area, and laundry. Completion expected within one to two weeks. Also included are college debating team selections for Alma with debates set for April 16 on compulsory arbitration for labor disputes. Alma plant opens new Standard Oil facility in Alma

The Standard Oil Company of Indiana completed the Alma plant on Grant Ave, a one story pressed brick building 30 by 80 feet hosting a warehouse, office and garage. The Saginaw branch planned the site to serve central Michigan, with a fleet of Republic delivery tracks and a full line of lubricants and greases. Charles A. Salvation Army buys the two story Baker block on West Superior street in Alma with plans to avoid immediate changes to Baker store and Charles H. Smith bakery. In the future a Salvation Army hall may be built, while Baker retains a ground step and the Smith bakery continues on the first floor. Alma College track prospects improve with returning runners

Alma College shows stronger track potential this year after Johnson’s departure. Walker of Almont emerges as a leading weight man, already pushing shot past forty feet. Parents Not Located Yet After Abandoned Baby Case

An abandoned three day old baby found on Elizabeth street porch Monday night drew police, city physician and neighbors into a search for the parents. The infant was warmed in a blanket with a hot water bottle and left with $45 in cash in the clothing. Investigators questioned physicians but found no clues, and footprints could not be traced beyond a snow covered road, suggesting an automobile departure.

Michigan Picnic Brings Gratiot County Face to City Crowd

At the Michigan Picnic in Syeanore Park Los Angeles Gratiot County was well represented with attendees from Ithaca St. Louis Alma and local old residents named in the report.
