The Alma Republicans present a robust city ticket from Mayor to Constable with candidates described as successful businessmen, broadminded, quick to perceive, and focused on the city’s best interests, deserving broad citizen support beyond party lines.
State Highway Commissioner Townsend A Ely presents seven reasons for adopting the county road system in Michigan counties. He cites economic merits, equitable funding, continuous main roads, experienced board members, and efficiency in equipment use. He notes Saginaw County’s progress and urges Gratiot voters to support county administration with state rewards.
The Alma city ballot lists National Progressive, Republican, and Democratic in order. Republican aldermen candidates are Fred H. Rowland Geo. H. Peery Victor H. Shepard Chas. Ward and Ransom J. Fraker, all noted businessmen ready to bring experience and honesty to city administration.
At a Friday banquet President Gidings appointed a nominating committee of Dr Hall Pompei Alfred Crawford Breckenridge and E J McCall Ithaca. The committee reported President Francis King Secretary C H Pinney and Treasurer F Bernard. Nominations were approved and the named officers will serve the ensuing year.
The writer reports on the Progressive Convention and argues Alma shows more improvements in two years than peers claim. He defends past projects, criticizes opposition, defends city finances and administration, and states willingness to serve again as mayor if the majority desires.
The four men Sharrar Smith Palfrey and Schwartz are urged as experienced nominees for the Gratiot County Board of Supervisors. They would represent Alma and the county, with Sharrar and Smith noted for long service and Palfrey and Schwartz as well known to citizens. The call urges Ahnavill voters to elect them.
The Record endorses Delos W. Adams seeking re election as Alma City Clerk. It lauds his seven years of service, saying municipal affairs should run like a well managed business and praising the city’s clerk and treasurer for excellent accounts.
The Alma city convention unanimously nominated E N Chadwick to succeed himself as Justice of Peace. Chadwick, a longtime Alma resident of twenty six years, member of Wi Meyer Post G A R and of the I O C F, has served sixteen years as a public dispenser of justice and has held Noble Grand in the lodge. A lifelong Republican voting for Lincoln in 1860 and for Republicans since, except Taft in his first term when illness kept him from voting. The Wellington advertises home cooking and coffee.
The 10th Gratiot County Republican Club banquet at Realty Opera House drew 200 guests. Rev. Mason led an invocation, menus featured four courses served by Alma ladies, and Senator William Smith of St Johns acted as toastmaster roaster. Miss Harriet McGreaham sang with encore, and the program closed with a light political anecdote. Continued on page 8.
